How I became a devotee of Srila Prabhupada and servant of Lord Krishna.

ISKCON first arrived in Australia in March 1970, brought to Sydney Australia by American devotees Bali-madana dasa and Upendra dasa.

I first saw the devotees in a 1967 TV documentary about the San Francisco Haight-Asbury "Summer of Love".
The devotee I saw was Upendra dasa above in the middle dancing. I was 15 years old.

George Harrison 1967 San Francisco Haight Ashbury Hippy district (Golden Gate Park)

There were no Hare Krishna devotees in Australia in the 1960s.

The devotees arrived in Australia in March 1970 and the only ISKCON Temple in Australia began in Sydney, by October about 15 devotees were living there.

Also in October 1970, a small group of devotees from Sydney visited Melbourne. It was there I first met the devotees and purchased ''Back to Godhead Magazine number 36'' off a young female devotee.

16 Months later, I moved into the new Melbourne Temple as a Brahmacari monk.

I moved into the Temple on February 18th 1972.

On April 5th 1972, we all went to the Melbourne Airport to meet Srila Prabhupada, the first thing I noticed about him was he had a distinct ''golden aura'' around him that stood out from all others.

His wonderful skin "glowed golden" and caught the attention of everyone in the Airport lounge, there was an amazing air about him that made the senses highly alert and able to see things around me with crystal clear clarity. Srila Prabhupada was so happy to see his disciples.

One congregational devotee yelled out - "Wow, does everyone sense these amazing vibrations coming from Prabhupada?"

Later on I heard Vegavan Prabhu went over and told this young man that a saintly person is judged by what they say, and never by how they look, encouraging him to come and "listen and HEAR" Prabhupada's lectures.

However, it was also a fact that Prabhupada's personal presents WAS unique and very inspiring and DID change everything around us.

I handed him a big red rose, he took the rose off me and with a big smile, then taped me on the head with his cane. I had tears running down my cheeks; it was such a special wonderful moment to see my Spiritual Master.

Later many devotees asked me what it was like to be tapped on the head by Prabhupada with his cane.

What was now happening in Australia was a great historical event and I felt very fortunate to be part of this special pioneering history. For the first time in Australian history, Srila Prabhupada brought with him the Vedic teachings presented by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

In 1965 Srila Prabhupada first came to the Western World during a time of amazing cultural changes. At that time the youth of America were experimenting with psychedelic mind expanding drugs like LSD due to being frustrated with the constant emphasis on materialism that on its own never gave permanent happiness.

Many of these young people were seeking a higher truth by experimenting with LSD, but Prabhupada told those who attended his lectures, that God is not so cheap that He can be found in a tablet.

He strongly preached against the taking of LSD, explaining God can ONLY be found in selfless devotional service (Bhakti).

And by following the basic principles of no meat eating, no gambling, no illicit sex, no intoxication (that includes LSD) and even tea and coffee.

There is also the principle of chanting the Hare Krishna Mantra a minimum of 16 rounds a day that helps one always remember Krishna and is a prayer that translates too-

"Oh my Lord O energies of the Lord, please engage me in your Devotional service"

Attempting to take drugs for spiritual realisations, is like foolishly attempting to go from Kindergarten to University OVERNIGHT!

NO one can quickly know God through any material means which obviously includes intoxicating their material senses and brain substance with a drug.

Attempting to do so will simply lead to being bewildered.

So Prabhupada forbid his followers to take LSD and Marijuana.

Srila Prabhupada's first visited Australia was in May 1971, I was in Sydney at the time and even visited the Paddington Temple before Prabhupada arrived in Sydney, but  believed I was not ready at this time to "reach the mountain top" as I called it, and meet Srila Prabhupada at this time.

However, two days after Prabhupada left Australia, I did go to the Darlinghurst Paddington Temple and met Upananda dasa (now Avadhoot Maharaj) and he engaged me in devotional service by getting me to read ''Krsna Book'' to him while he cooked the evening offerings for the new Radha Gopinatha Deities installed by Srila Prabhupada a week before.

I greatly regretted not meeting Prabhupada while he was here, I was taking LSD at that time believing it would help me "reach the mountain top".

NO, I should of went to met him!

Although, the most profound realisation from LSD, was that we have all been here before in many different material bodily vessels.

Very profound realisation about reincarnation.

Today, I believe the most important realisation I got from LSD, was to find a Teacher, a Spiritual Master, a Guru who can show one the proper way to enter Spiritual life.

Therefore, I do not regret taking LSD on now seeing what happened to all my old friends who never took it and therefore NEVER opened their minds to the realm of possibilities.

"Now on the mountain top", I stayed around the Temple and associated with the devotees for a few months and helped them move to their new Temple location in Hereford Street Glebe.

Then with my girl friend Sue, we went to Queensland and stayed on a farm at Mudgeeraba till the end of the year.

I never took LSD again because I knew both Jesus and Srila Prabhupada were now my teachers.

If you're sincere God will find you by sending His bonafide representative, you do not even have to search for him, he WILL find you.

Never stop praying and this WILL happen

However, it was not until February 18th 1972, that I again went back to the Temple, this time in Melbourne.

On February 17th 1972, I was fed up with everything and out of desperation, went to St Paul's Cathedral in the heart of Melbourne as a last resort to find some meaning and purpose to life.

Inside this wonderful Church, I went down on my knees in total helplessness and, with tears in my eyes, prayed to Jesus-

“Please, please my Lord use me in your service, in your plan, my life is now useless, it is better you use me in your plan to spread God Consciousness”

I prayed like this for about an hour, then to my surprise, a young Hare Krishna devotee in saffron robes walked into the Church (Shyamananda dasa, a brilliant artist who was admiring the various Christian paintings there).

I was greatly moved by seeing Shyamananda’s simplicity and knew the mumbling I was hearing was like the rosary, he was chanting the names of God, the Hare Krishna mantra.

This association with a devotee brought back memories of reading "Krsna Book" while Upananda cooked for the Deities when I was at the Sydney Temple 6 months previously.

I immediately realised this as a gift and answer to my prayers to Jesus and was totally convinced Jesus was showing me the way to Srila Prabhupada and answering my prayers to be used in His plan.

This was very blissful for me, I could feel the presence of God all around me and that Jesus had revealed to me who God is, what He looks like and even His name and who His pure devotee was.

''Krishna the Supreme Personality of Godhead and cause of all causes and His dear pure servant Srila Prabhupada''.

The Hare Krishna Movement was not new to me, as already explained, I first met the devotees in October 1970 when I purchased ''Back to Godhead Magazine number 36''.

It was only 7 months earlier, in March 1970, that ISKCON first arrived in Australia. In this magnificent St Paul's Cathedral, I had tears in his eyes experiencing this connection to God.

My greatest realisation was one must find a bonafide Spiritual living Teacher and surrender to him.

I suppose this is why the Beatles, including my main influence at that time, George Harrison, All travelled to India a few years before this in 1968.
They were also looking for spiritual guidance.

I never took my eyes off Shyamananda dasa as he walked around the Cathedral with all these thoughts going through my mind.

When the Shyamananda left, I followed him out and then walked to the city square and once again saw another devotee distributing "Back To Godhead Magazines".

This bubbling young girl in her teens approached me in a beautiful sari with a flower in her hair, “Hari Bol'’ she said, then continued.

''I’m with the Hare Krishna Movement and here is our Magazine Back to Godhead, we are having a love feast tomorrow, a very special day, come along and experience the ecstasy of Krishna Consciousness! Hare Krishna!!''

I was was blown away by her sweet presence, as they used to say back then, I was thrilled and truly believed my prayers for a Spiritual Master had been answered.

The most astonishing thing was, when I turned up the next day at the 14 Burnett Street Temple in St Kilda with my 10 year old brother (February 18th 1972); it was Lord Caitanya’s appearance day, one of the most auspicious days in the Krishna Conscious calendar.

Back then, the date was taken from the Book ''The Teachings of Lord Caitanya'', who appeared in this world on February 18th 1486, so that is the day we celebrated Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu's appearance.

Later on I discovered the date for the year 1972, according to the Vaishnava calendar, was February 29th (different every year due to astrological charts).

However, the Temple authorities in Melbourne in February 1972 were not aware of this in these early pioneering days.

That night at the Temple I went on to play the part of Hari dasa Thakur in a Drama (because I had a scraggly beard like Hari dasa Thakur had) about Lord Nityananda being hit on the head with a clay pot.

Lord Caitanya (played by Kurma dasa instructed Nityananda Prabhu (played by Ajita dasa) and Haridasa Thakur (played by me) to go to everyone’s house in Nadia and request them to chant Krishna’s name.

The two great devotees eagerly set forth and began to knock on each and every door with the request, “please chant Krishna’s name, worship Krishna and teach others about Krishna.”

They were happily received by the pious people, while the envious would blaspheme them. Completely unconcerned by favourable or unfavourable reactions, they proceeded around the town.

In Nadia there lived two very sinful brothers called Jagai, (played by Upananda dasa) and Madhai (Played by and Sanaka dasa Stavros Steve Verges).

Jagai and Madhai were born in pious Brahman families however; due to bad association they had become meat eaters, drunkards, thieves and arsonists.

There was no crime that they had not committed, including the most abominable sin of killing cows and Brahmins and abusing and having sex with so many different women.

The entire town was terrified of these two persons who seemed to be the very personification of all sinful activities.

On the day Nityananda Prabhu and Haridasa Thakur were moving in the town, these two brothers, completely intoxicated were alternatively fighting and embracing each other.

After observing them for some time Nityananda Prabhu compassionately decided to deliver them and thus approached them.

Despite the warnings of the town people Lord Nityananda and Haridasa Thakur, approached the two drunkards instructing them to chant the holy name of the Lord.

Hearing these words the two sinners looked up and seeing the two saintly figures roared in anger.

They leapt up and ran to catch the two sannyasis. The two devotees fled at the sight of the attacking brothers.

Apparently terrified they shouted, “Krishna! Save us!! Govinda!,” and ran. (I remembers clearly Arjita and myself doing this).

The two brothers wandered off in their drunken condition along the banks of the Ganga where Caitanya Mahaprabhu bathed. Constantly drunk, they started harassing and terrorising the devotees.

Eventually Nityananda and Haridasa went to the Ganges to see Lord Caitanya however, the two brothers again accosted them. On seeing Lord Nityananda, Madhai became furious and struck Him with a broken earthen pot.

When Jagai saw the blood flowing from the wound, he became compassionate and restrained his brother.

While Nityananda Prabhu patiently stood, looking at the brothers with compassion, tolerating the pain and humiliation, Haridasa ran to tell Caitanya Mahaprabhu about the incident. (I kept repeating my lines for this part of the play and kept repeating Lord Caitanya's name so I would not forget).

Hearing that Nityananda Prabhu had been hurt by the brothers, Caitanya Mahaprabhu ran towards them with the intention to kill them.

He summoned His chakra which looked like death personified to the two terrified brothers.

However Nityananda Prabhu, who is even more merciful than Lord Caitanya, quickly intervened and begged Caitanya Mahaprabhu to stop.

He reminded Him of His mission to kill the sinners by saturating them with love of Godhead, to hate the sin but NOT the sinners. Thus appeased the Lord who summoned back His chakra.

Nityananda Prabhu told Caitanya Mahaprabhu that it was Jagai who had saved Him from further harm at Madhai’s hand.

Hearing this, Caitanya Mahaprabhu said to Jagai -

“By protecting Nityananda you have purchased Me. You may ask any desire you have in your heart. From today on you will have pure love and devotion for Krishna”.

Hearing this Jagai fell at the feet of the two Lords and grasping the feet of Caitanya Mahaprabhu wept.

Seeing the wonderful transformation in his brother, a remorseful Madhai begged for the mercy of the Lord. However, since he had committed the worst of all offences, that of attacking a Vaishnava, the Lord did not even consider all his pitiful pleas for mercy.

Only after Madhai grasped the feet of Nityananda Prabhu and received His mercy did Caitanya Mahaprabhu agree to deliver Madhai also.

That night I took my 10 year old brother back to the home of my birth and then came back and joined the Temple.

I was immediately shaved up by the Temple President Sanak dasa and eventually become initiated by Srila Prabhupada on July 10 1972.

To this very day I am thankful to Jesus Christ who directed me to Srila Prabhupada, who in turn continued to teach us all about Krishna’s pastimes.

Five weeks later Srila Prabhupada came to Melbourne on Wednesday April 5th 1972.

Those days were very remarkable. So kind and merciful is Srila Prabhupada, who gives even the most degraded a chance to become Krishna Conscious.

Most of us were just teenage boys and girls back then, very sincere seekers of truth.

I remember the program at the Melbourne Town Hall meeting on April 7th 1972 and the wonderful kirtan Srila Prabhupada led.

It was ecstatic, everyone was totally fixed on hearing Srila Prabhupada chant Jaya Radha Madhava, we all danced in total bliss. Never before or since have I heard such a beautiful kirtan.

When we all returned to the Temple at 14 Burnett Street, St. Kilda. I was assigned to stay out in the front of Prabhupada’s room and even sleep there after the programs we attended.

My service was to bring Prabhupada prasad, clean clothing ready for the next morning and guard his room.

Some amazing conversations went on in Prabhupada’s room. Some nights he would call devotees in and preach to the early hours of the morning.

I was in there with his servant Nanda Kumar prabhu, his secretary Syamasundara prabhu and Hanuman dasa, who was due to take Sannyas in a few days.

There were just 4 of us listening to Srila Prabhupada for hours talk about Krishna's pastimes from the 10th Canto from his ''Krsna Book''

The following night we went to a Franciscan Monastery. As Srila Prabhupada made his way to the monastery, he and the devotees were greeted by the monks and a long table full of different wonderful fruits.

This was all very artistically arranged and Prabhupada was very pleased.

I immediately went and preached to a middle aged monk, however stopped preaching when I saw all the devotees sitting in front of Srila Prabhupada and went and sat down in front of Prabhupada with all the other devotees.

I then saw Prabhupada call over Vegavan Prabhu, who then came and tapped me on the shoulder.

He whispered in my ear -

“Srila Prabhupada wants you to continue preaching to that monk, preaching is more important than even associating with the Spiritual Master Prabhupada told me to to tell you.”

So I went back and preached to the monk.

Back then, Srila Prabhupada did not eat till after coming back from a program. He would then eat a hearty meal of prasadam while listening to a recording of his lecture.

Afterwards Prabhupada would discuss Krishna Consciousness with Syamasundara das, his secretary, Nanda Kumar das, his personal servant and an excellent mridanga player, and Hanuman dasa and as previously explained, I was there too.

Back in these pioneering years, only 15 devotees lived in the Temple, so it was easy to have constant association with Prabhupada.

Shyamananda the artist, the one I saw in St Paul's Cathedral in the City, would come from Torque and speak with Prabhupada for hours.

At this early pioneering period of Australian ISKCON, there was only 15 devotees living in the Temple, so for the entire time Srila Prabhupada was in Melbourne, I was in his room or guarding outside it.

Only about four devotees at a time were in Prabhupada's room at a time. As said, I often stayed in his room listening to many discussions.

I could see Prabhupada often found Prabhupada found Hanuman Dasa a very humorous character.

Hanuman was also very excited about taking sannyas off Srila Prabhupada on the following Sunday.

The next morning, while I was half awake guarding Srila Prabhupada’s room, I noticed two small feet gently walk past me without making even the slightest sound, I sat up immediately and paid my obeisances.

Prabhupada was a little jolted on his way to the bathroom by my obeisances and said softly to me, ‘Hare Krishna not so loud’.

Over the years I guarded his room every year he came until his last visit in 1976.

When Prabhupada came to Sydney in February 1973, he heard I had driven the Hare Krishna Double Decker Temple bus throughout 1972 before it was written off in an accident when Hari Sauri fell asleep while driving.

Prabhupada asked me if it was mechanically sound, I told him it had never broken down and explained the Bus could never go any faster than 60 mph due to having a governor on it.

I also said I was not driving the Bus when it crashed, but was in the Temple room area on the Bus with a blanket over my head that protected me from the side window's shattering when the Bus ran into a ditch on the side of the road and overturned.

One morning in Sydney during Prabhupada's 1973 February visit, while all the devotee were out on street Sankirtan, I stayed behind to clean the Temple Room while the Deities slept behind a closed curtain and washed the walls and floor.

There were four paintings on the wall, one of Krishna Balarama, one of Radha and Krishna, one of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur, Srila Prabhupada's Spiritual Master, and one of Lord Narasingha deva.

So I took all them from the wall and put them on the step of Prabhupada's Vyasasana, instead of on the floor out of respect and then started washing the walls down.

Then to my surprise, Srila Prabhupada walked into the Temple Room alone, no one else was around, he was chanting japa (Hare Krishna) on his beds

Srila Prabhupada then began laughing and laughing, then said -

"Their Lordships and my Spiritual Master do not go there"

To Prabhupada, it looked like I put them all at his lotus feet because it was his Vyasasana with his photo on it.

Then, in between laughing,  Prabhupada said -

"As soon as you can, put them where they belong back on the wall, that is not where they should be".

He seemed to be seeing something more than what I could see, I was just there cleaning the Temple Room walls and moved the paintings to the step of his Vyasasana so I could wash down the walls.

Prabhupada found it humorous seeing the Lord's at his Lotus feet even though not done purposely

He remained in the Temple Room chanting for 15 minutes, and just before he left, he looked over at me and said -

"The present circumstances of this Age is a great opportunity for becoming Krishna Conscious, never forget our goal is to return home, back to Godhead and preach this message to everyone!"

He then payed his obeisances in the Temple Room looking at the photos and left, I also quickly payed Prabhupada my obeisances.

In 1976, as Srila Prabhupada’s Bodyguard again at Melbourne Temple, I again not only stayed out the front of his room, but slept there as well.

At that time, four well shaven suited men, all in their forties, would come by the Temple and harass the devotees with high tech cameras and listening devices and verbal foul mouthed threats

Keep in mind, the average age of a devotee back in 1976 was twenty-five, so these adult men were pretty scary.

They were upset that the younger generation were taking a big interest in the Hare Krishna Movement and saw ISKCON as a threat to the Catholic Church and its youth.

Also they were not happy we purchased the property that was now our Melbourne Radha Krishna Temple. It was previously the Carmen Catholic Boys School.

Often they would follow us on street Sankirtan chanting Hare Krishna, film us and try to intimate the devotee’s distributing books by taking many Books, then ripping them up and throwing the books or magazines in a rubbish bin!

These guys were real heavy and well known in Melbourne's underworld of crime and even murders.

These men were also part of a self appointed fundamentalist Christian deprogramming group with the Catholic Church that dealt with what they considered threats to the Catholic Church’s youth being converted to other faiths especially Hinduism.

One afternoon Pusta Krishna Swami went down to speak to them and one of them, Tom Ericson, in a barrage of abuse, threatened to kill Srila Prabhupada.

Coming back with a stunned look on his face Maharaj said -

“These people are demons! Big demons!!

Pusta Krishna Maharaj was very concerned at what these men had said, and was reluctant to even repeat it however; he did tell a few devotees that Prabhupada’s life had been threatened.

Hari Sauri prabhu, Srila Prabhupada’s personal servant at the time, was appalled and disgusted that a pure devotee of Krishna was threatened in this way and was so concerned we bought a shotgun to protect Prabhupada.

The next day, while also guarding the Temple and hiding out the front of the Temple in a car, these men, about 5 of them, all walked past trying to provoke the devotees and scare us.

I then opened the door of the car suddenly and one of them, again Tom Erickson, pulled out a handgun and pointed it at me.

Erickson was the ringleader and high up in the Catholic Church too, even knighted by the Pope.

He was a well known private detective known and even respected by many as a deprogrammer and was even a rumoured hit man.

Amogha prabhu was at the front gate and saw what had happened, I ran from the car and climbed over the front wall of the Temple, about 7 feet high, so quickly that Amogha was astonished how I went over the fence like lighting.

We then went and told Prabhupada what had happened and he said -

“Then our movement is having some success, these men feel threatened because our movement is having so much success with today’s young people”

We called the police as Prabhupada instructed and they came and spoke with them.

Ugrasrava dasa never stopped giving lip to them, calling them demons and dogs to their faces.

Unfortunately the police did nothing, they knew who he was.

Ugrasrava was not impressed with the cops no action response and just kept calling them "dogs of the Catholic Church" among other things.

At night I would stay out on the balcony of Prabhupada’s House with the shotgun that Hari Sauri had bought, staying awake watching Srila Prabhupada through the window translate his Books late into the night.

Even though the night was freezing cold out on the balcony, watching Srila Prabhupada gave me warmth as he translated.

After his servant Hari Sauri prabhu left the room, Prabhupada would go around to all the windows and doors to make sure they were locked.

For days these men continued to intimidated the devotees and guests, but we were told to ignore them.

We all did this, except for Ugrasrava Prabhu who constantly continued to give them lip.

Actually, there was nothing they could do that could stop our preaching movement because we had Krishna and Prabhupada on our side.

In fact, their arrogant threatening presence only made us more determined to spread the Sankirtan Movement of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

A week after Srila Prabhupada had left, a drive by shooting occurred and gunshots went through one of the windows - it was Kurma prabhu’s room.

He was there at the time and was fortunately unhurt as the bullets went into the wall above his head.

The next day, it made page two of the Melbourne Sun, the Australian public were outraged that such violence could happen over Religion in Melbourne.

A few months after that, someone attacked our Temple again and threw a small bomb over the back fence exploding on one of the cars.

Only a few hours before that I was resting in that same car while doing guard duty.

This attack also made the first bulletin on the evening TV news in Melbourne.

The outcry of the public, due to the media reports, seemed to stop any further attacks from these Catholic fundamentalist fanatics.

During all these attacks, we remembered what Srila Prabhupada had said -

“Then our movement is having some success, these men feel threatened because our movement is having so much success with today’s young people”

Many years later the main offender from the Catholic Church, Tom Erickson got very sick due to a blood disorder and had his leg amputated.

Then to the surprise of the devotees, apparently rang Balarama dasa Temple President of Melbourne and apologised for what he had done when Srila Prabhupada was here.

And Balarama forgave at least him.

Yes, if a soul is very sincere in seeking forgiveness, the devotees WILL forgive.

Only then will Krishna forgive.

Hari Krishna, All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Your fallen servant,
Gauragopala dasa ACBSP

PART 2

Another Pioneering ISKCON Pastime.

The pioneering days of ISKCON in Australia when we were jailed for chanting Hare Krishna on City Streets.

15 years before the Soviet Union world wide campaign for their freedom began, devotees in some Western Countries like Australia, had to fight and also go to jail for their freedom too.

In February 1972, the Melbourne City Council in Australia began a Campaign to try and move the Hare Krishna devotees away from the City streets and out of Melbourne.

This struggle with the Council would continue on for another three years, with devotees constantly jailed and the Temple raided at 3 am to arrest devotees with unpaid fines for chanting Hare Krishna on the streets and selling "Back to Godhead Magazine" (no big books back then).

Not only were the devotees continuously harassed on the streets by Council, now more oftened we were being harassed in our own Temple with middle of the night Police raids looking for devotees who had never paid their fines also for performing drama plays in the Melbourne City square.

Back then we did many plays every day on the streets dipicting Krishna or Lord Caitanya's pastimes.

The Hare Krishna Movement arrived in Australia in March 1970, there were no devotees in Australia or New Zealand in the 1960s.

Upananda Prabhu (Srila Prabhupada’s first initiated disciple in Australia May 1970) now Avadhoot Maharaj was first approached by the Melbourne City council in April of 72 about chanting in the streets and fines placed on our Sankirtan Van; Upananda humbly explained to these gentlemen that everything belongs to Krsna.

He strongly told them, in the mood of Srila Prabhupada, that they should be assisting and allowing the devotees of Lord Krsna to park freely while we perform Kirtan or chanting Hare Krsna on the streets of the City of Melbourne and performing Drama plays in the City square.

The Council officers couldn’t believe what they just heard. With a look of complete bewilderment at Upananda’s totally fearless bold proposal, the Council officers angrily said “Are you on drugs, you must be on something, I’ve never ever heard anything so preposterous!”

Upananda in his always-calm layback gentle voice replied “No, we don’t take any drugs, we don’t need that nonsense because we chant Hare Krsna and as I suggested, you should also seriously consider joining us, you can even chant with us if you like during your lunch break”

Hearing what they considered a smart ‘so and so’ answer, they ordered Upananda to immediately get the devotees to cease chanting on the City streets, stop performing drama plays that depicting the wonderful past times of Lord Caitanya and His devotees, and stop parking illegally otherwise we will throw you all in Jail!!

Of course, stopping our street activities never happened. Eventually as the harassment intensified, we nick named the head Council officer ‘Kamsa’ because of his determination to get rid of the Hare Krsna devotees.

He looked really mean to us with his "square jaw" that became a second nick name for him amongst the devotees.

In those days, in-between chanting on the streets, and distributing Back To Godhead Magazine, we would always put on colourful plays in beautiful costumes during lunchtime in the city square or at the Melbourne University.

These Dramas would attract huge crowds, sometimes hundreds of people however; we were always ready for the Council or police to pounce.

One time we had a big fire yajna (sacrifice) in the City Square to perform a devotee marriage in view of the public.

We started the fire, began chanting various mantras, attracting a big crowd then all of a sudden, the police, fire brigade, and Council Officers came from all direction nevertheless, we all got away, including bride Rasarani devi dasi and groom Amogha dasa.

Over the next few months however, many devotees did get caught and went to jail over the Councils so-called illegal street chanting and Dramas that were simply beautifully done to glorify God known as Krishna.

Another time we put on the play Jagai and Madai about two fallen devotees now drunkards who offended Lord Nityananda and Haridas Thakur by throwing a clay pot at Lord Nityananda, that hit Him in the head leaving a cut.

To make this play look real, Sanak dasa Stavros Steve Vergis asked hippies in the crowd to play the part of Jagai and Madai.

However, when the two hippies in the crowd threw the clay pot at the devotee actor, the part of Lord Nityananda, pretending it hit him, two police officers at the back of the crowd thought it was real and the devotees were being assaulted.

Immediately the Police started chasing them with their baton (cops carried batons back then) but then Sanak started chasing the cops yelling out -

"It's only a play, it's only a play!!"

Anyway, as this went on the play contined and the devotee playing Lord Caitanya arrived on seen and was furious that Nityananda was assaulted by the two drunkards however, Lord Nityananda begged mercy for the two drunken rascal.

Seeing the great compassion of Lord Nityananda, Lord Caitanya forgave Jagai and Madai.

Although the actors playing Jagai and Madai were still being chased down by the cops, and Sanak chasing the cops trying to explain to them it is only a play.

Back in the City square, the two drunkards were suppose to fall down at Lord Nityananda's feet due to His great compassion and then showing forgiveness.

The fact is Lord Nityananda is even more compassionate, compassionate and forgiving than Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself.

Back in those days devotees were chanting seven or eight hours a day through the city streets, and at the same time other devotees were putting on plays at the Uni or City square.

In both situations, we were always dogging City Council officers and Police although some Police tolerated us and never harrassed us unlike the Council who wanted us gone

Some Police never bothered us as long as we stayed to the side of the walk way as we chanted.

But NEVER the Council, they were determined to get us off Melbourne Streets.

In spite of this, nothing could stop us, we new we had Srila Prabhupada guiding us, we were therefore determined to practise our civil right and publicly glorify God no matter how determined the Council were in trying to stop us.

We had Krsna on our side!

As a further protest, as earlier explained, we also refused to pay any our traffic fines that our Van accumulated everyday.

We would continue doing this until the Council allowed us our ‘human right’ to glorify Krsna on the streets of Melbourne without harassment from the Council Officers and the Police.

It got to the point where EVERY Council officer looked for our Van during the day as depicted in the cartoon below.

So, for the next three years, they just kept giving us traffic tickets that we refused to pay and fines for chanting (Sankirtan) we also refused to pay.

By then even the Police started getting heavier.

So every day they chased us in cat and mouse style pursuit, locking up those they caught for ‘chanting Hare Krsna’ on the streets or performing Dramas or plays.

Eventually we would accumulate $60,000 in traffic fines and thousands of more dollars in ‘chanting on the street’ fines.

On another occasion in October 1972, that for the first time, attracted enormous media coverage, we were caught and arrested for chanting Hare Krsna in the City; I was playing mrdunga drum and Sanak was leading with cartals.

In a surprise show of heavy aggression, the police and City Council Officers swooped on our party of 14 brahmacaris and matajis, devotees ran in all directions but Sanak and myself were slowed down due to protecting the clay mrdunga and carrying large Krsna Books that had recently arrived.

Most of the time I would get away from ‘Square Jaw’ and his Council cronies, as I was very athletic in those days however, on this occasion we got busted and dragged away to Jail. This was my second visit to jail within two months for chanting Hare Krsna.

At Police Headquarters, we were questioned and refused bail and spent the night in the City Watchhouse (jail).

The Police were, for some reason, very annoyed at us and wouldn’t provide bail due to what they called, "not cooperating".

The fact was, we did cooperate. They separated us for an interview and we answered their questions honestly.

The officer who interviewed me, asked my name, I replied “Gauragopala dasa brahmacari”, adding my spiritual Master gave that name in July (1972) a few months earlier.

"That's a long name" the officer said.

I thought to myself, Wow, you think my name was short chuckled under my breath, ‘you’ve heard nothin yet’

He then asked me for my father’s name, “Do you really want to know that “ I answered

“Yes, we haven’t got all day, just give me his name,” the officer demanded.

So slowly, I began to give my fathers name to him so he could write it down as I was spoke,

“Jaya om Vishnu-pada paramahamsa parivrajakacharya ashtottara-shata
Sri Srimad His Divine Grace Abhay Charanaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada.”

And at the end in a louder voice I shouted “KI JAYA!!”

The officer looked at me with this dumb surprised annoyed look of bewilderment, thinking I was being smart so and so and disrespectful to him however, I kept repeating that this WAS my fathers real name in full.

In the end the officer just gave up and threw us in jail.

The next morning Kurma dasa and myself went to court, we refused to pay the fine, and were sent straight to Pentridge prison for a 10-day sentence.

As we were being taken, away both Sanak prabhu and Cittahari Prabhu (then as Chris prabhu) told us that Madhudvisa Swami said we should make a stand and austerely fast.

So, as a further protest to let the Council know their laws in this case, were unjust, I refused to eat their boga and began a fast.

I also remembered an encouraging quote from the American Civil rights leader Martin Luther King at who was assassinated four years earlier; he was a hero to me before I met Srila Prabhupada, King once said:

“An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law’.

Anyway, the prison authorities never separate us and locked us in the same cell.

We chanted with our fingers like the way we do the gayatri mantra because they had confiscated our beads however, they did allowed us to keep our devotee clothing.

I scratched on the wall ‘Krishna’s devotees were here, chant Hare Krishna and be free’

Within an hour, food was pushed through a small opening at the bottom of the door, knowing our vegetarian diet, they presented us with boiled potatoes, peas, beans and pumpkin with an added written note from the prison cook, ‘blessed food’.

We put the food aside and refused to eat it, although Kurma eventually gave in and broke the fast that Madhudvisa Swami was not happy about.

In the meantime, back at the Temple, Cittahari and Sanaka Prabhus were getting phone calls from the media and were told that as long as we are in jail, we would protest by fasting.

The interested media was very supportive; also believing it was unjust to throw us in jail for something we strongly believed in, agreeing with Cittahari that there was no harm to anyone chanting Hare Krsna on the streets.

For the first time, our imprisonment attracted the attention of the public

The next day an article appeared on page three of the Melbourne Sun, a stand out page in all Newspapers with the heading ‘Two Hare Krishna devotee’s fast in Jail for their right to publicly glorify God’

In the meantime, at the jail, we were escorted down for breakfast, which turned out to be a little comical.

Radio talk back had been debating our plight and many prisoners had listened to this on the prison Radio, so, on seeing us, nearly all of them stood up in a tongue in cheek jester of respect, with some saying in a singing mood ‘Hare Hare Krishna Krishna’ with a few imitating our dancing.

Again, I refused to eat breakfast, and offered it to other prisoners with a quick ‘Hare Krsna’ offering before giving it to them.

The food hall full of prisoners then went into a roar with prisoners cheering, some again singing Krishna Krishna.

However, Madhudvisa Swami was annoyed at Kurma for breaking the fast knowing the media would eventually find out about it ending our media attention about fasting.

It maybe hard to believe with hardened criminals, but no one was rude to us or offended or threatened us while we were in prison.

Many letters to the Editors of major newspapers, along with talk back radio shows, had demanded we be allowed to freely practise our religion on the streets of Melbourne.

Also, there was a public outcry by Television Actors, Musicians and Artists, even a song written about our imprisonment by the famous musician Matt Taylor entitled ‘Krishna Loves You too’ that later went on his ‘Straight As A Die’ Album in 1973.

In this way, the Minister of Prisons, Brain Dixon was compelled to act; he had now personally taken an interest in our case.

He actually came to Pentridge with his secretary and spoke to us, then complained to the Prison Warden that these young boys should not be in this Jail. He immediately ordered our release.

Outside the Jail, there was a blissful kirtan lead by Madhudvisa Swami, and then the guards opened the gates and released us.

I clearly remember Cittahari Prabhu hugging us with tears of ecstasy running down his checks, his ecstatic emotion was very moving and also bought tears to my eyes.

This was only the very pioneering beginning of out struggle with the Melbourne City Council, that would go on for another three dreaded years. Melbourne was a very conservative City back then, tucked away ‘down under’ a long way away from the rest of the World.

Even though the Government Minister Brian Dixon and the majority of the public was on our side, many City Councillors were determined to ban us from the streets.

Keep in mind, back then in Australia in 1972, we still had in place the ‘white Australia policy’, which meant it was very difficult for anyone of colour to take up residency or citizenship here.

And here we were introducing Krsna Consciousness to the conservative Australian public!

When Srila Prabhupada eventually came to Melbourne a year later, the Minister of ‘Prisons and Housing and Sport’ Brian Dixon, came to see him and Srila Prabhupada thanked Mr. Dixon for releasing his Spiritual children from jail.

I remember that Srila Prabhupada preached to him and his lady friend very sturdily about the philosophy of Krsna Consciousness.

So eventually as the years passed, we did eventually win our struggle. The Council wrote off the money in an agreement that included us legally chanting on the streets.

To this very day, we have never been harassed since. Some years ago, the then Mayor of the Melbourne City Council would often have lunch at Gopals Restaurant that is directly across the road from the City Hall.

Also, one final note, many years later, in the mid 1980s, I ran into the Council Officer we humorously called Kamsa and ’square jaw’. He was with his son and had long ago retired.

He was very apologetic explaining that no one back then could work out how we all ticked. He then said he admired the many devotees who stood up for what they believed in, finishing our conversation by saying:

“My Son is a student at RMIT and often visits Gopals Restaurant, I don’t think I’m a bad person, I was just doing my job. You know, I did read some of those books we confiscated and also heard your Spiritual Leader speak at the Melbourne Town Hall.

It took me awhile to understand, but I now see his teaching are giving direction and understanding to so many young people today who follow his example.”

We shook hands, I said Hare Krsna and he replied ‘Hare Krsna’ The mercy of Lord Caitanya can deliver ANYONE, all we have to do is sincerely ask for His mercy.

The cartoon below appeared in the Sun Newspaper, Melbourne Australia’s biggest daily in 1972

Here are the words to Matt Taylor’s song ‘Krishna Loves You Too’ that was released as a single in 1973

“Things are getting bad when you can’t practise your religion, Walk through the streets, giving all the love you can to Krishna.

Elohim, God, or Allah, the name doesn’t matter,

Love is a commodity you can’t put a price on,

People who love life give to one another,

‘Cos God’s in me, God’s in you.

Yes, City Councillors, Krishna loves you too!

When you go to church on Sunday to hear a sermon

They pass round the plate, are you telling me it’s begging? Is God a one-day affair, the next day you don’t care?

Krsna people make the city streets a temple

What’s wrong with living your religion every second

If God’s in me, God’s in you?

Parking attendants, Krishna loves you too.

I remember Christians thrown to the lions,

Because their faith was seen as defiance.

But now I see Centurions in Blue, ain’t nothing new.

Religion’s not exempt when it comes to revolution

Each step along the way is plagued by persecution,

Still, God’s in me, God’s in you.

Mr Policeman, Krishna loves you too.

Salvation Army playing on the corner,

Turned-on our folks in another era, but now I see

God remains the same, forms of God have changed.

Now you’ve heard my story, just forget your fear,

And chant ‘Krishna’ every day

And your world will ’come clear

‘Cos God’s in me, God’s in you.

Yes, every human being, Krishna loves you too. Krishna, Krishna, shine your light on me…..)”

14 year old Russian Gurukula boy Nandakisor Dasa and senior adult devotee Vaninanth Dasa left their material bodies due to a car accident on 25th July 2019.

Dear Devotees just over a week ago 2 Russian devotees were killed in a car accident and 2 others seriously injured.

PHOTO - 14 year old Gurukula student Nandakisor Dasa who left his body due to the car accident.

From Moscow, written by Russian devotee Aniruddha Dasa GKG-

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

On July 25th, 2019 two Russian devotees died in car accident. The departed devotees are Vaninanth Prabhu (brahmacari from Nizhniy Novgorod temple, disciple of Gopal Krishna Goswami) and Nandakisor (14 years old Gurukula student).

They were going to Sankirtan tour when their car was hit on the highway by a big truck.

There were two other devotees in the car – Adhoksaja Prabhu (sannyasa candidate and Sankirtana leader in Russian Golden Ring Region, disciple of Niranjana Swami) and Gauranga (another Gurukula student).

Adhoksaja Prabhu got a rib broken and his liver got hit badly. Gauranga broke an arm. The bodies of Vaninatha and Nandakisor Prabhus are going to be cremated in Moscow tomorrow (a few days ago).

Please pray for the well-being of the departed souls and speedy recovery of injured devotees.

Your servant, Aniruddh das GKG, From Moscow.

All our training is tested at the time of death.

But even then, because of sensual disturbances or mental illusions a broken material body may cause, interfering with our ability to remember Krishna, the Lord STILL protects His devotee.

Krishna is so kind that He WILL carry what we lack if we are doing everything we can to remember Him in our broken condition while leaving our troublesome material body.

Krishna promises this in Bhagavad Gita As It Is.

In the 9th chapter verse 22 is found the famous verse of how Krishna takes care of His devotees:

“But those who always worship Me with exclusive devotion, meditating on My transcendental form - to them I carry what they lack, and I preserve what they have.”

Guru-kripa – “Why does Krishna allow us to enter the material world? Why doesn't he stop us?

Srila Prabhupada - "Love is reciprocal, voluntary, good exchange of feeling. Then there is love. NOT by force! Krishna does not want to become a lover like that, ‘You love me, otherwise I shall kill you!" July 8, 1976.

Guru-kripa – “Why does Krishna allow us to enter the material world?”

Srila Prabhupada – “Because you have got little independence, therefore you can violate. You are part and parcel of God, you have little independence, that has to be accepted but we can misuse that. Krishna-bahirmukha haïä bhoga väïchä kare. That MISUSE is the cause of our falldown”. (Conversation, Mayapur, February 19, 1976)

Is the Spiritual Master no different than his photo? (from 1972)

1 - Form is called "vapu"
2 - Teachings are called "vāṇī"

Srila Prabhupada - "Next you ask if I am present in my picture and form? Yes. In form as well as in teachings. To carry out the teachings of guru is more important than to worship the form, but none of them should be neglected. Form is called "vapu" and teachings is called "vāṇī". Both should be worshiped. Vāṇī is more important than vapu''.[Letter to Tuṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Ahmedabad 14 Dec 1972]

A photo of Srila Prabhupada was on the Altar in Nairobi when he was there in 1975, so a devotee asked the question -

"Is there any difference between picture and murti form of the Spiritual Master?"

Devotee - "You said that if we made a marble image of you and offered food to it, you would not accept it. So…"

Srila Prabhupāda - "Hm?"

Brahmānanda - "In your lecture you said that someone who offers food to a statue of yourself…"

Srila Prabhupāda - "He is not statue, but people think statue. He is Kṛṣṇa Himself. But because we cannot see Kṛṣṇa at the present moment, therefore He appears like a statue".

Brahmānanda - "His question… You stated that a statue of yourself is not the same as you, and yet in some of our temples, such as Vṛndāvana, the mūrti of Your Divine Grace has been installed and they are offering prasādam. So is it the same, that the prasādam is accepted by the guru?"

Srila Prabhupāda - "Yes. Sākṣād-dharitvena samasta-śāstraiḥ. Guru is nondifferent from Kṛṣṇa. That is accepted by all the śāstra.

Sākṣād-dharitvena samasta śāstraiḥ. Sākṣād-dharitvena samasta-śāstrair uktaḥ: It is said,” tathā bhāvyata eva sadbhiḥ, “and those who are advanced devotees, they accept it like that.” Kintu prabhor yaḥ priya eva tasya:

"But the guru’s position is the most confidential servant.”

So guru is the servant God, and Kṛṣṇa is the master God. Both of them are God, servant God and master God. Guru kṛṣṇa kṛpāya pāya bhakti-latā-bīja[Cc. Madhya 19.151].

So we have to serve both the servant and the master. Through the servant, we go to the master". (Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 3.28.18 Nairobi, October 27, 1975)

There are 7 layers of our small 4 billion mile diameter ''Bhu-Mandala'' Universe that has 14 planetary systems in it. Each layer of element our small universe is surrounded by is 10 times thicker than the previous layer. Starting with the small 4 billion mile diameter Bhu-Mandala Universe

Each Egg shaped Universe, below (Brahmanda) in Painting, is coming from Maha Vishnu.

Our small Universe is deep inside one of them. Our small earth globe is 24,901 miles in circumference and is 7,917.5 miles in diameter.

It is NOT the Bhu-Mandala Universe described in Srimad Bhagavatam as 4 billion miles in diameter or 12.6 billion miles in circumference that has 14 Planetary Systems in it.

Here is the proper bona fide understanding our earth globe, the Universe known as Bhu-Mandala we live in and the greater Universe that the Bhu-Mandala universe is deep inside of -

There are 7 layers of our small 4 billion mile diameter ''Bhu-Mandala'' Universe that has 14 planetary systems in it.

Each layer of element our small universe is surrounded by is 10 times thicker than the previous layer
Starting with the small 4 billion mile diameter Bhu-Mandala Universe that is very deep within the Brahmanda Egg shaped larger ''gigantic'' universe that come from Maha Vishnu along with millions of others.

So just multiply each layer by 10.

For example the 4 billion miles diameter Bhu-Mandala = 40 billion.

Then you multiply 40 billion by 10.
Like this for all 7 layers of material elements and it adds up too.

44 Quadrillion 444 Trillion 444 billion miles.

The first covering of the universe is earth, and it is ten times thicker than the universe itself. If the universe is four billion miles in size, then the size of the earthly covering of the universe is four billion times ten.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 3.11.40
This phenomenal material world is expanded to a diameter of four billion miles, as a combination of eight material elements transformed into sixteen further categories, within and without, as follows.

PURPORT

As explained before, the entire material world is a display of sixteen diversities and eight material elements. The analytical studies of the material world are the subject matter of Sāńkhya philosophy.

The first sixteen diversities are the eleven senses and five sense objects, and the eight elements are the gross and subtle matter, namely

earth,
water,
fire,
air,
sky,
mind,
intelligence,
ego.

All these combined together are distributed throughout the entire universe, which extends diametrically to four billion miles.
Besides this universe of our experience, there are innumerable other universes.

Some of them are bigger than the present one, and all of them are clustered together under similar material elements as described below.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 3.11.41

TRANSLATION

The layers or elements covering the universes are each ten times thicker than the one before, and all the universes clustered together appear like atoms in a huge combination.

PURPORT

The coverings of the universes are also constituted of the elements of earth, water, fire, air and ether, and each is ten times thicker than the one before. The first covering of the universe is earth, and it is ten times thicker than the universe itself.

If the universe is four billion miles in size, then the size of the earthly covering of the universe is four billion times ten.

The covering of water is ten times greater than the earthly covering, the covering of fire is ten times greater than the watery covering, the covering of air is ten times greater than that of the fire, the covering of ether is ten times greater still than that of air, and so on.

The universe within the coverings of matter appears to be like an atom in comparison to the coverings, and the number of universes is unknown even to those who can estimate the coverings of the universes.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 3.11.42

The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is therefore said to be the original cause of all causes. Thus the spiritual abode of Viṣṇu is eternal without a doubt, and it is also the abode of Mahā-Viṣṇu, the origin of all manifestations.

PURPORT

Lord Mahā-Viṣṇu, who is resting in yoga-nidrā on the Causal Ocean and creating innumerable universes by His breathing process, only temporarily appears in the mahat-tattva for the temporary manifestation of the material worlds.

He is a plenary portion of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, and thus although He is nondifferent from Lord Kṛṣṇa, His formal appearance in the material world as an incarnation is temporary.

The original form of the Personality of Godhead is actually the svarūpa, or real form, and He eternally resides in the Vaikuṇṭha world (Viṣṇuloka).

The word mahātmanaḥ is used here to indicate Mahā-Viṣṇu, and His real manifestation is Lord Kṛṣṇa, who is called parama, as confirmed in the Brahma-saḿhitā:

īśvaraḥ paramaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ
sac-cid-ānanda-vigrahaḥ
anādir ādir govindaḥ
sarva-kāraṇa-kāraṇam
[Bs. 5.1]

“The Supreme Lord is Kṛṣṇa, the original Personality of Godhead known as Govinda. His form is eternal, full of bliss and knowledge, and He is the original cause of all causes.”

Do the maths yourself based on Srimad-Bhagavatam and work out the massive size of our Brahmanda Egg shaped Universe.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam Canto 3 Chapter 11 Text 41

The layers or elements covering the universes are each ten times thicker than the one before. (End of Text)

Srimad-Bhagavatam Canto 3 Chapter 26 Text 52

This universal egg, or the universe in the shape of an egg, is called the manifestation of material energy.
Its layers of water, air, fire, sky, ego and mahat-tattva increase in thickness one after another.

Each layer is ten times bigger than the previous one, and the final outside layer is covered by pradhāna.

Within this egg is the universal form of Lord Hari, of whose body the fourteen planetary systems are parts.

PURPORT

Srila Prabhupada - There are seven coverings, each one ten times greater than the one preceding it.

The layer of water is ten times greater than the diameter of the universe, and the layer of fire is ten times greater than that of water.
Similarly, the layer of air is ten times greater than that of fire.

These dimensions are all inconceivable to the tiny brain of a human being.

It is also stated that this description is of only one egg like universe.

There are innumerable universes besides this one, and some of them are many, many times greater.
It is considered, in fact, that this universe is the smallest; therefore the predominating superintendent, or Brahmā, has only four heads for management.

In other universes, which are far greater than this one, Brahmā has more heads.

In the Caitanya-caritāmṛta it is stated that all these Brahmās were called one day by Lord Kṛṣṇa on the inquiry of the small Brahmā, who, after seeing all the larger Brahmās. (End of Srila Prabhupada's Purport)

There is some confusion in Bhagavatam as in one place it says the first layer is earth and in another place it says the first layer is water.

Also in many cases only 6 layers are mentioned and the names change to like Maha tattva is said to be a layer in one purport and ether is not even mentioned in others.

Srila Prabhupada says there are 7 layers 8 including the original 4 billion miles in diameter or 12.6 billion miles in circumference that has 14 Planetary Systems in it  inner Bhu-Mandala universe.

Anyway one can do their own maths, start with the size of our Universe Bhu-Mandala.

There are 7 layers of elements, do the maths and see what you get. Each layer is 10 times greater than the previous layer as Srimad Bhagavatam tells us.

1 - 4 billion miles × by 10 = 40 billion miles (Earth)
2 - 40 billion miles × by 10 = 400 billion miles (water)
3 - 400 billion miles × by 10 = 4 Trillion miles (fire)
4 - 4 Trillion miles × by 10 = 40 Trillion miles (air)
5 - 40 Trillion miles × by 10 = 400 Trillion miles (sky or ether)
6 - 400 Trillion miles × by 10 = 4 Quadrillion miles (Total material energy)
7 - 4 Quadrillion miles × by 10 = 40 Quadrillion (ego)

Now add this up and see the maths for yourself.

8 layers including the inner 4 billion miles in diameter or 12.6 billion miles in circumference that has 14 Planetary Systems in it that is deep within the Brahmanda egg shaped outer Universe.

The full size of our Brahmanda Egg shaped Universe that has the 4 billion miles diameter Bhu-Mandala smaller Universe very deep inside at its center, originates from the Body of Maha Vishnu.

Therefore our Brahmanda is 44 Quadrillion 444 Trillion 444 billion miles in diameter. This is what our small Bhu-Mandala Universe with its 14 different planetary systems that includes a small earth global sphere is deep within.

Explaining the material Universe we live in.

Our individual material universe, with its 14 planetary systems, is found deep inside a larger spherical massive Universe called a "Brahmanda" that surrounds and encases our small inner universe found deep within it.

There are billions of Brahmanda's in the material creation.

Our small Universe within one of the Brahmandas, is known as Bhu-Mandala which is just a mere 4 billion miles in diameter.

Our "Brahmanda housing dome" is a massive egg shaped, yet almost spherical covering that houses and encases our small material universe deep within it known as Bhu-Mandala.

The makeup of the entire material universe is difficult to comprehend, our Brahmanda, like all others coming from Maha Vishnu, is massive in size whereas our entire inner Bhu-Mandala universe is but an insignificant spec in relation to size.

Also our individual universe, with its 14 planetary systems, found deep inside the massive Brahmanda, is further found within the lotus steam coming from Garbhodakashayi Vishnu who resides in the center of our Brahmanda.

The vast number of "Brahmanda Universes" each surrounds and encases a smaller universe where Garbhodakashayi Vishnu and Lord Brahma resides.

Our small Universe in our Brahmanda is known as Bhu-Mandala which is just a mere 4 billion miles in diameter.
The 14 Planetary Systems are in the stem coming from the Body of Garbhodakashayi Vishnu.

This is explained in Srimad Bhagavatam canto 1 Chapter 3 Text 2-
"Within the stem of the lotus there are fourteen divisions of planetary systems, and the earthly planets are situated in the middle".

Srila Prabhupada - "All these planetary systems are scattered over the complete universe, which occupies an area of "two billion times two billion square miles". SB 2.5.40-41, Purport.

Question - "I have heard that all of the planets are in the stem of the lotus from which Brahma took birth. How are we to understand this?
Answer by the late Sadaputa dasa PhD -

"This is stated in SB 1.3.2p. Since the planetary systems are distributed throughout the universal globe, it must be that the stem encompasses everything within this globe.

We should note that the standard pictures we see of Brahma sitting on the lotus flower are three-dimensional representations of a scene that cannot be seen using our ordinary senses.

Although the pictures show the lotus stem emerging from the navel of Garbhodakashayi Vishnu, Brahma himself was unable to locate the origin of the stem. Thus, part of the scene was beyond the senses of Brahma, and so it is certainly beyond the reach of our senses.

We also note that the planetary systems were created by Brahma from the lotus (SB 3.10.7-8). This suggests that these systems were produced by transforming the substance of the lotus". End of Quote.

Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 1 Chapter 3 Text 2 Purport explains -

Srila Prabhupada  - "From Karanodakasayi Visnu (Maha Vishnu) skin holes innumerable universes have sprung up.

In each and every universe, the purusa enters as the Garbhodakasayi Visnu. He is lying within the half of the universe which is full with the water of His body.

And from the navel of Garbhodakasayi Visnu has sprung the stem of the lotus flower, the birthplace of Brahma, who is the father of all living beings and the master of all the demigod engineers engaged in the perfect design and working of the universal order.

Within the stem of the lotus there are fourteen divisions of planetary systems, and the earthly planets are situated in the middle.

Upwards there are other, better planetary systems, and the topmost system is called Brahmaloka or Satyaloka.

Downwards from the earthly planetary system there are seven lower planetary systems inhabited by the asuras and similar other materialistic living beings.

From Garbhodakasayi Visnu there is expansion of the Ksirodakasayi Visnu, who is the collective Paramatma of all living beings.

He is called Hari, and from Him all incarnations within the universe are expanded.

Therefore, the conclusion is that the purusa-avatara is manifested in three features —

1 - First the Karanodakasayi (Maha Vishnu) who creates aggregate material ingredients in the mahat-tattva,
2 - Second the Garbhodakasayi who enters in each and every universe,
3 - Thirdly the Ksirodakasayi Vishnu who is the Paramatma of every material object, organic or inorganic.

One who knows these plenary features of the Personality of Godhead knows Godhead properly, and thus the knower becomes freed from the material conditions of birth, death, old age and disease, as it is confirmed in Bhagavad-gita, In this sloka the subject matter of Maha-Visnu is summarized.

The Maha-Visnu lies down in some part of the spiritual sky by His own free will. Thus He lies on the ocean of karana, from where He glances over His material nature, and the mahat-tattva is at once created.

Thus electrified by the power of the Lord, the material nature at once creates innumerable universes, just as in due course a tree decorates itself with innumerable grown fruits.

The seed of the tree is sown by the cultivator, and the tree or creeper in due course becomes manifested with so many fruits. Nothing can take place without a cause.

The Karana Ocean is therefore called the Causal Ocean. Karana means "causal." We should not foolishly accept the atheistic theory of creation. The description of the atheists is given in the Bhagavad-gita.
The atheist does not believe in the creator, but he cannot give a good theory to explain the creation.

Material nature has no power to create without the power of the purusa, just as a prakrti, or woman, cannot produce a child without the connection of a purusa, or man.

The purusa impregnates, and the prakrti delivers. We should not expect milk from the fleshy bags on the neck of a goat, although they look like breastly nipples.

Similarly, we should not expect any creative power from the material ingredients; we must believe in the power of the purusa, who impregnates prakrti, or nature.

Because the Lord wished to lie down in meditation, the material energy created innumerable universes at once, in each of them the Lord lay down, and thus all the planets and the different paraphernalia were created at once by the will of the Lord.

The Lord has unlimited potencies, and thus He can act as He likes by perfect planning, although personally He has nothing to do. No one is greater than or equal to Him. That is the verdict of the Vedas". SB 1.3.2p End of Quote.

Our small inner Universe's 14 Planetary Systems are situated inside the lotus stem surrounded and encased by the larger universal Brahmanda.

This massive Brahmanda outer shell or covering is made up of  7 material layers that is collectively 44 quadrillion, 444 trillion, 444 billion miles in diameter.

The 7 layers are - (From S B Canto 6 Chapter 16 Text 37)

1 - EARTH,
2 - WATER,
3 - FIRE,
4 - AIR,
5 - SKY,
6 - TOTAL MATERIAL ENERGY,
7 - FALSE EGO.

Srimad Bhagavatam says there are millions of individual Brahmanda universes coming from Maha Vishnu making up the entire material creation (1/4 of the Spiritual Sky) that also house their own inner universe.
All smaller universes inside their Brahmanda are of different sizes, some, like ours, are only 4 billion miles in diameter.

The "4 billion miles (500,000,000 Yojanas)" diameter of our universe with its 14 planetary systems is one of the smallest. Ours is called Bhu-Mandala.

In Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 3 Chapter 26 text 52 in Purport Srila Prabhupada states -

"The space within the hollow of the universe cannot be measured by any human scientist or anyone else."
This also suggests that something unexpected must happen to space (as well as time) as one approaches the outer universal Brahmanda shell, for it hardly seems impossible to measure a distance of 2 billion miles in ordinary space.

Srila Prabhupada - ''We have to imagine that these universes (Brahmandas), which according to our limited knowledge are expanded unlimitedly, are so great that the gross and subtle ingredients—the five elements of the cosmic manifestation, namely

earth,
water,
fire,
air,
sky,
total material energy,
false ego—

All are not only within the universe but cover the universe in seven layers, each layer ten times bigger than the previous one.

In this way, each and every universe is very securely packed, and there are numberless universes. All these universes float within the innumerable pores of the transcendental body of Mahā-Viṣṇu.

It is stated that just as the atoms and particles of dust are floating within the air along with the birds and their number cannot be calculated, so innumerable universes are floating within the pores of the transcendental body of the Lord. For this reason, the Vedas say that God is beyond the grasp of our knowledge. '' Krsna Book 87

We CANNOT see from one universe to another, this is because our individual universe is surrounded and encased by 7 thick material layers that is our outer egg shaped universe called a Brahmanda.

So it is impossible to see the millions of other Brahmandas outside our inner universe (inside a massive Brahmanda) because of those 7 thick material layers that only rare mystic yogis and advanced devotees like Arjuna can see and pass through.

So of course Krishna and Arjuna did not encounter such limitations that we experience with the combination of these elements like earth, water, fire all gross elements as Bhagavad Gita explains.

Srila Prabhupada - ''The Lord is not visible to the eyes of ordinary men, those who are beyond the covering layers because of their transcendental devotional service can still see Him''. Krsna Book 87.

We cannot see through our Brahmanda that surrounds and encases our small universe, Srila Prabhupada is clear on this.
Srila Prabhupada - ''Lord Krishna and Arjuna crossed over the great region of darkness covering the material universes.

Arjuna then saw the effulgence of light known as the brahmajyoti. The brahmajyoti is situated ''outside the covering of the material universes'', and because it cannot be seen with our present eyes, this brahmajyoti is sometimes called avyakta''. Krsna Book, 89

Srila Prabhupada - ''Each universe is covered by various layers of material elements (The 7 layers of the outer Brahmanda covering), and therefore although the universes are clustered together, we CANNOT see from one universe to another.

In other words, whatever we see is within this one universe. In each universe there is one Lord Brahmā, and there are other demigods on other planets, but there is only one sun''.- (Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 5 Chapter 21 Text 11, Purport)

Every universe is covered by seven layers—earth, water, fire, air, sky, the total energy and false ego—each ten times greater than the previous one. There are innumerable universes besides this one, and although they are unlimitedly large, they move about like atoms in You. Therefore You are called unlimited [ananta].

PURPORT

This verse describes the coverings of the universe (saptabhir daśa-guṇottarair aṇḍa-kośaḥ).

1 - The first covering is EARTH,
2 - the second is WATER,
3 - the third is FIRE,
4 - the fourth is AIR,
5 - the fifth is SKY,
6 - the sixth is the TOTAL MATERIAL ENERGY,
7 - the seventh is the FALSE EGO.

Beginning with the covering of earth, each covering is ten times greater than the previous one. Thus we can only imagine how great each universe is, and there are many millions of universes". (Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 6 Chapter 16 Text 37)

As confirmed by the Lord Himself in Bhagavad-gītā (BG 10.42): -

athavā bahunaitena
kiṁ jñātena tavārjuna
viṣṭabhyāham idaṁ kṛtsnam
ekāṁśena sthito jagat.

"But what need is there, Arjuna, for all this detailed knowledge? With a single fragment of Myself I pervade and support this entire universe."
The entire material world manifests is only one fourth of the Supreme Lord's energy. Therefore He is called ananta''.

In the purport in Srimad-Bhagavatam Canto 2 Chapter 2 Text 28-

"Śrīla Śrīdhara Svāmī confirms that a part of the material nature, after being initiated by the Lord, is known as the mahat-tattva.

A fractional portion of the mahat-tattva is called the false ego. A portion of the ego is the vibration of sound, and a portion of sound is atmospheric air.

A portion of the airy atmosphere is turned into forms, and the forms constitute the power of electricity or heat.

Heat produces the smell of the aroma of the earth, and the gross earth is produced by such aroma. And all these combined together constitute the cosmic phenomenon.

The extent of the cosmic phenomenon or our individual universe is calculated to be diametrically four billion miles in size.

Then the outer covering known as the Brahmanda shell begins.
The first covering of Earth is calculated to extend forty billion miles, (10 times the size of the inner universe) and the subsequent coverings of the universe are respectively of

water,
fire,
air,
sky,
total material energy,
false ego

One after another, each extending ten times further than the previous.

The fearless devotee of the Lord penetrates each one of them and ultimately reaches the absolute atmosphere where everything is of one and the same spiritual identity.

Then the devotee enters one of the Vaikuṇṭha planets, where he assumes exactly the same form as the Lord and engages in the loving transcendental service of the Lord.

That is the highest perfection of devotional life. Beyond this there is nothing to be desired or achieved by the perfect yogī."

It is also says in Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 3 Chapter 26 Text 52 -

Srila Prabhupada  - "The dimensions of the universe are estimated here. The outer covering is made of layers of water, air, fire, sky, ego and mahat-tattva, and each layer is ten times greater than the one previous.

The space within the hollow of the universe cannot be measured by any human scientist or anyone else, and beyond the hollow there are seven coverings, each one ten times greater than the one preceding it.

The layer of water is ten times greater than the diameter of the universe, and the layer of fire is ten times greater than that of water.
Similarly, the layer of air is ten times greater than that of fire. These dimensions are all inconceivable to the tiny brain of a human being."

In Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 3 Chapter 29 Text 43 Prabhupada says-

Srila Prabhupada  - "It is understood from this verse that all the planets in outer space are floating, and they all hold living entities.

The word svasatam means "those who breathe," or the living entities. In order to accommodate them, there are innumerable planets. Every planet is a residence for innumerable living entities, and the necessary space is provided in the sky by the supreme order of the Lord.

It is also stated here that the total universal body is increasing. It is covered by seven layers, and as there are five elements within the universe, so the total elements, in layers, cover the outside of the universal body.

The first layer is of earth, and it is ten times greater in size than the space within the universe;

The second layer is water, and that is ten times greater than the earthly layer;

The third covering is fire, which is ten times greater than the water covering. In this way each layer is ten times greater than the previous one.

In the above mentioned purports to Srimad  Bhagavatam seemingly gives contradictory information that can make things confusing to scholars.

(SB 2.2.28 and SB 3.26.52 says it is water and SB 3.29.43 says it is earth)? Furthermore, what is the breadth of the first layer?

The purport to Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 2 Chapter 2 Text 28 says it is 80,000 000 miles while the diameter of the universe is 4 000,000,000 miles.

 This does not add up.

On the other hand Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 3 Chapter 29 Text 43 says the first layer based on the diameter of our Bhu-Mandala Universe which is 4 billions miles diameter, is 10 times greater in size than our 4 billion mile diameter inner Bhu-Mandala Universe, this adds up to 4 billion miles in diameter for our fist covering or layer of our small Universe.

So 80 million miles diameter for our first layer said in Canto 2 Chapter 2 Text 28 is definitely not 4 billion miles multiplied by 10 that equals 40 billion miles in diameter.

Gravity, what is it? What is the force in the material Universe called Gravity?

So what causes the forces in all the material universe called gravity?

Srila Prabhupada says he does not believe in gravity, what does he mean? Einstein also did not believe in the idea of ''Newton's laws of gravity'' in his time.

Therefore, not only Prabhupada, but Einstein also did not agree with Newton's law of gravity. The meaning of the word ''gravity'' is a word trying to explain a universal force, this was not explained correctly by Newton's that Prabhupada also rejected.

Einstein's explanation of ''the universal force through all the material universe (gravity) is simple, it is objects bending spacetime. So curved space is gravity according to Einstein.

This concept was still new in the 1960s and 70s and Prabhupada never commented on this. His explanation was even more simple than Einstein space curvature and mass

**Srila Prabhupada** - ''Ultimately Krishna's laws hold the universes together, Lord Ramacandra was able to make a bridge by causing the big stones to float n the water, so counteracting the law of gravitation is the law of the Supreme''.

**Srila Prabhupada** - ''Gravitation is caused by the Supreme Lord, so He is also able to remove that law or do anything and everything at His will''.

Other than those comments, Prabhupada never really understood gravity also included the the mass of an object. This is why a stick of wood will float and a piece of steel the same size will sink in water. This ''mass of an object'' Prabhupada never understood as found in the following letter.

**He tried to explain in a letter to Rupanuga - Tokyo 3 May, 1972**

**Srila Prabhupada** - ''Another revelation about so called gravity is that the needle, when put into the water, it goes down quickly to the bottom. But a big, big log, weighing one ton, does not go down. Who has made this law? If the law of gravity is there, why does it not apply to the big log? If you know something like swimming, then the law of gravitation will not work'' Tokyo 3 May, 1972

Today in 2019 because young people are well educated, even a 6th grader will point out Prabhupada's misunderstanding above in using the word gravity.

But Prabhupada's main point is who knows better than Lord Krishna how to do everything, so Krishna can change anything, therefore we worship Him as the greatest Scientist.

Not only Prabhupada but Einstein also did not agree with Newton's law of gravity.

It became apparent during the latter part of the nineteenth century that there is a conflict between Newtonian mechanics and classical electrodynamics. Einstein, and a few others before him addressed this conflict in a variety of ways.

Einstein’s way was to find a new mechanics, which is consistent with electrodynamics, but reduces, in approximation, to Newtonian mechanics for objects moving at speeds that are small compared to the speed of light in vacuum.

Experiments with subatomic particles (particularly muons in secondary cosmic rays created high in the atmosphere) moving at nearly the speed of light have shown that Einstein’s theory of special relativity explains the behavior of these particles, but Newton’s mechanics does not.

More recently, with satellites used by GPS, it has been necessary to use Einstein’s special and general relativity to keep the calculated positions of objects on Earth accurate.

Both the special theory and the general theory of relativity have passed every experimental and observational test we have been able to devise, but Newton’s theory does not agree with experience at the level of accuracy we can now achieve.

What role does the atmosphere or ''air'' play on gravity?

Srila Prabhupada explains that planets floating in outer space is due to the manipulation of the air.

This is true for birds and 747s, even water cannot exist as a liquid without the presence of air, water in a vacuum without air immediately turns to ice.

However, the so called presence of ''air'' does not make sense outside earth's atmosphere where there is no air. This is a fact, there is no manipulation of the air that we know on our globe, in outer space.

Outer space is almost a vacuum as seen from our dimension of space-time

Even on earth the higher you go the thinner the air; so this following statement must be maturely decoded and understood because the word ''air'' must mean something else as the air we breath does NOT exist in outer space, this is no theory it is a proven fact.

This is Srila Prabhupada's comment on why planets float but needs a proper interpretation that simply does not exist in these early pioneering years where some devotees foolishly clam this planet is flat and satellites are a hoax.-

**Srila Prabhupada** - ''All these planets are moving only by the air. So the heavy land, heavy cloud is carried by the air. It is a question of adjustment of air, not the law of gravity. Now the whole universal planetary system are floating and rotating round the polestar. Is that law of gravity, rotating?

It is the arrangement of the air. By the air it is up. Just like there is dust storm, so many are floating in the air. There is no question of law of gravity; it is the air. And the..., who is controlling the air?''

Srila Prabhupada says he does not believe in gravity, what does he mean? Einstein also did not believe in the idea of gravity in his time.

Einstein's general theory of relativity tells us that gravity does not exist in the way Newton's science believed which is -

''Gravity is a force which tries to pull two objects toward each other. Anything which has mass also has a gravitational pull.

The more massive an object is, the stronger its gravitational pull is. Earth's gravity is what keeps you on the ground and what causes objects to fall.

We tend to think of gravity as a force that affects objects, but Einstein showed it was something else.

You jump up, and gravity brings you back down to Earth. You reach the brow of a hill and gravity accelerates you down the other side. People used to think gravity behaves in the way Newton thought of it, as a force that affects and changes the motion of something else.

That was how it seemed until Einstein came along. His general theory of relativity tells us that gravity is not quite that simple and does not exist in the way Newton's science believed.

General relativity provides a framework under which the laws of physics look the same for everyone at every moment, regardless of how they are moving. Einstein achieved this by making gravity a property of the universe, rather than of individual bodies.

General relativity describes gravity as geometry. The fabric of the universe – the four dimensions of space and time – is full of lumps and bumps created by the presence of mass and energy.

This warping is unavoidable; whenever anything – be it you, me, a piece of space dust or a photon of light – tries to travel through the universe in a straight line, it actually follows a trajectory that is curved by any mass and energy in the vicinity.

The result of this curvature is what we think of as gravity. To look at it a slightly different way, gravity is not what one body does directly to another, but what a body’s mass does to the surrounding universe.

All the other forces in nature have opposites. In the case of the electromagnetic force, for example, it can attract or repel, depending on the charges of the bodies involved. So what makes gravity different?

The answer seems to lie with quantum field theory. The particles that transmit the strong, weak and electromagnetic forces have various types of charge, such as electric or colour charge.

“Those charges can be either positive or negative, leading to different possibilities for the sign of the force,” says Frank Wilczek of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

This is not the case with gravitons, the hypothetical particles that quantum field theory says should transmit gravity. “Gravitons respond to energy density, which is always positive,” says Wilczek.

Or are we assuming too much here? “We don’t know that gravity is strictly an attractive force,” cautions Paul Wesson of the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.

He points to the “dark energy” that seems to be accelerating the expansion of the universe, and suggests it may indicate that gravity can work both ways.

Some physicists speculate that dark energy could be a repulsive gravitational force that only acts over large scales.

“There is precedent for such behaviour in a fundamental force,”

Wesson says. “The strong nuclear force is attractive at some distances and repulsive at others.”

Either way, the apparent difference between gravity and the other fundamental forces poses a problem for physicists wanting to create a “theory of everything” that provides a single explanation for them all.

Einstein was among the first scientists to try to marry gravity with other theories of physics, yet we may be no closer now than he was when he began his search.

The most popular quantum gravity theories today seem to have fundamental problems that no one knows how to solve.

The Conclusion -

Srila Prabhupada - ''Ultimately Krishna's laws hold the universes together, Lord Ramacandra was able to make a bridge by causing the big stones to float n the water, so counteracting the law of gravitation is the law of the Supreme, gravitation is caused by the Supreme Lord, so He is also able to remove that law or do anything and everything at His will''. (Tokyo 3 May, 1972)

"When bulls are yoked together and tied to a central post to thresh rice, they tread around that pivot without deviating from their proper positions—one bull being closest to the post, another in the middle, and a third on the outside.

Similarly, all the planets and all the hundreds and thousands of stars revolve around the polestar, the planet of Mahārāja Dhruva, in their respective orbits, some higher and some lower.

Fastened by the Supreme Personality of Godhead to the machine of material nature according to the results of their fruitive acts, they are driven around the polestar by the wind and will continue to be so until the end of creation.

These planets float in the air within the vast sky, just as clouds with hundreds of tons of water float in the air or as the great śyena eagles, due to the results of past activities, fly high in the sky and have no chance of falling to the ground. (Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 5 Chapter 23 Text 3)

PURPORT

According to the description of this verse, the hundreds and thousands of stars and the great planets such as the sun, the moon, Venus, Mercury, Mars and Jupiter are not clustered together because of the law of gravity or any similar idea of the modern scientists.

These planets and stars are all servants of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Govinda or Kṛṣṇa, and according to His order they sit in their chariots and travel in their respective orbits.

The orbits in which they move are compared to machines given by material nature to the operating deities of the stars and planets, who carry out the orders of the Supreme Personality of Godhead by revolving around Dhruvaloka, which is occupied by the great devotee Mahārāja Dhruva.

This is confirmed in the Brahma-saṁhitā (5.52) as follows:

yac-cakṣur eṣa savitā sakala-grahāṇāṁ
rājā samasta-sura-mūrtir aśeṣa-tejāḥ
yasyājñayā bhramati sambhṛta-kāla-cakro
govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi

“I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, under whose control even the sun, which is considered to be the eye of the Lord, rotates within the fixed orbit of eternal time.

The sun is the king of all planetary systems and has unlimited potency in heat and light.”

This verse from Brahma-saṁhitā confirms that even the largest and most powerful planet, the sun, rotates within a fixed orbit, or kāla-cakra, in obedience to the order of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

This has nothing to do with gravity or any other imaginary laws created by the material scientists.

Material scientists want to avoid the ruling government of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and therefore they imagine different conditions under which they suppose the planets move.

The only condition, however, is the order of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

All the various predominating deities of the planets are persons, and the Supreme Personality of Godhead is also a person.

The Supreme Personality orders the subordinate persons, the demigods of various names, to carry out His supreme will. This fact is also confirmed in Bhagavad-gītā (9.10), wherein Kṛṣṇa says:

mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ
sūyate sa-carācaram
hetunānena kaunteya
jagad viparivartate

“This material nature is working under My direction, O son of Kuntī, and it is producing all moving and unmoving beings.

By its rule this manifestation is created and annihilated again and again.”

The orbits of the planets resemble the bodies in which all living entities are seated because they are both machines controlled by the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

 ? As Kṛṣṇa says in Bhagavad-gītā (18.61):

īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ
hṛd-deśe ’rjuna tiṣṭhati
bhrāmayan sarva-bhūtāni
yantrārūḍhāni māyayā

“The Supreme Lord is situated in everyone’s heart, O Arjuna, and is directing the wanderings of all living entities, who are seated as on a machine, made of the material energy.”

The machine given by material nature—whether the machine of the body or the machine of the orbit, or kāla-cakra—works according to the orders given by the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead and material nature work together to maintain this great universe, and not only this universe but also the millions of other universes beyond this one.

The question of how the planets and stars are floating is also answered in this verse. It is not because of the laws of gravity. Rather, the planets and stars are enabled to float by manipulations of the air.

It is due to such manipulations that big, heavy clouds float and big eagles fly in the sky.

Modern airplanes like the 747 jet aircraft work in a similar way: by controlling the air, they float high in the sky, resisting the tendency to fall to earth.

Such adjustments of the air are all made possible by the cooperation of the principles of puruṣa (male) and prakṛti (female).

By the cooperation of material nature, which is considered to be prakṛti, and the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is considered the puruṣa, all the affairs of the universe are going on nicely in their proper order. prakṛti, material nature, is also described in the Brahma-saṁhitā (5.44) as follows:

sṛṣṭi-sthiti-pralaya-sādhana-śaktir ekā
chāyeva yasya bhuvanāni bibharti durgā
icchānurūpam api yasya ca ceṣṭate sā
govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi

“The external potency, māyā, who is of the nature of the shadow of the cit [spiritual] potency, is worshiped by all people as Durgā, the creating, preserving and destroying agency of this mundane world.

I adore the primeval Lord Govinda, in accordance with whose will Durgā conducts herself.”

Material nature, the external energy of the Supreme Lord, is also known as Durgā, or the female energy that protects the great fort of this universe.

The word Durgā also means fort. This universe is just like a great fort in which all the conditioned souls are kept, and they cannot leave it unless they are liberated by the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Lord Himself declares in Bhagavad-gītā (4.9):

janma karma ca me divyam
evaṁ yo vetti tattvataḥ
tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma
naiti mām eti so ’rjuna

“One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna.”

Thus simply by Kṛṣṇa consciousness, by the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one can be liberated, or, in other words, one can be released from the great fort of this universe and go outside it to the spiritual world.

It is also significant that the predominating deities of even the greatest planets have been offered their exalted posts because of the very valuable pious activities they performed in previous births. This is indicated herein by the words karma-nirmita-gatayaḥ.

For example, as we have previously discussed, the moon is called jīva, which means that he is a living entity like us, but because of his pious activities he has been appointed to his post as the moon-god.

Similarly, all the demigods are living entities who have been appointed to their various posts as the masters of the moon, the earth, Venus and so on because of their great service and pious acts.

Only the predominating deity of the sun, Sūrya Nārāyaṇa, is an incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Mahārāja Dhruva, the predominating deity of Dhruvaloka, is also a living entity. Thus there are two kinds of entities—the supreme entity, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and the ordinary living entity, the jīva (nityo nityānāṁ cetanaś cetanānām).

All the demigods are engaged in the service of the Lord, and only by such an arrangement are the affairs of the universe going on.

Regarding the great eagles mentioned in this verse, it is understood that there are eagles so big that they can prey on big elephants.

They fly so high that they can travel from one planet to another. They start flying in one planet and land in another, and while in flight they lay eggs that hatch into other birds while falling through the air.

In Sanskrit such eagles are called śyena. Under the present circumstances, of course, we cannot see such huge birds, but at least we know of eagles that can capture monkeys and then throw them down to kill and eat them.

Similarly, it is understood that there are gigantic birds that can carry off elephants, kill them and eat them.

The two examples of the eagle and the cloud are sufficient to prove that flying and floating can be made possible through adjustments of the air.

The planets, in a similar way, are floating because material nature adjusts the air according to the orders of the Supreme Lord.

It could be said that these adjustments constitute the law of gravity, but in any case, one must accept that these laws are made by the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

The so-called scientists have no control over them.

The scientists can falsely, improperly declare that there is no God, but this is not a fact.

"The mercy of Krishna follows the mercy of His pure devotee".

"The mercy of Krishna follows the mercy of the devotee".

By His Holiness Giriraj Swami ACBSP

When Srila Prabhupada was coming to America on the Jaladuta steamship, as he was nearing Commonwealth Pier in Boston, he prayed to Krishna,

“All living entities have come under the control of the illusory energy by Your will, and therefore, if You like, by Your will, they can also be released from the clutches of illusion.

I wish that You may deliver them. Therefore, if You so desire their deliverance, then only will they be able to understand Your message.”

Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura has discussed how the conditioned souls get bhakti. With evidence from the scriptures, he proves that one cannot get bhakti by

karma
jnana,
fruitive activities,
mental speculation.

Or by -

austerities,
charity,
mystic perfections,
or any other pious acts.

He quotes from Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 11 Chapter 3 Text 31, bhaktya sanjataya bhaktya: bhakti comes from bhakti. But how does bhakti come from bhakti? What is the actual process?

He says that someone may propose that one gets bhakti by the mercy of Krishna. But Krishna is equal to all. He is the supreme father of all living entities, so He must be equal to all.

So we cannot simply say that the cause of bhakti is the mercy of Krishna, because Krishna would bestow bhakti equally on everyone, whereas practically we see that some get bhakti while others do not.

Then Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura says,

“One could propose that one gets bhakti by the mercy of the devotee.”

But again one might argue that the devotee, like the Lord, should be equal to everyone.

Here Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura says that the preacher, the madhyama-bhakta, by nature shows partiality or discretion in distributing mercy.

As stated in Srimad-Bhagavatam (11.2.46): prema-maitri-krpopeksa yah karoti sa madhyama—he gives his love to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, makes friendship with devotees, shows mercy to the innocent, and neglects the envious. Thus, giving mercy, specifically to the innocent, is the preacher’s function.

Even though, in the ultimate sense, a maha-bhagavata such as Srila Prabhupada sees everyone equally, everyone as a servant of Krishna and therefore in no need of mercy, when he takes the position of a preacher and functions as a preacher, he gives mercy to the innocent.

How does he give the mercy? He prays to Krishna to give mercy, and thus it is said that the mercy of Krishna follows the mercy of the devotee.

Here I have my own personal experience: I met Srila Prabhupada in 1969 in Boston, and I was touched by him.

I felt that he was the spiritual master for whom I had been looking. About three months later, the devotees there needed another pujari.

In those days one could be a pujari after first initiation. They thought, “He has been here for three months; why not recommend him?”

So Satsvarupa Maharaja, as the temple president, recommended me in a letter to Srila Prabhupada.

Srila Prabhupada was in Los Angeles at the time, so I suppose in one sense I was actually initiated there. Srila Prabhupada wrote back, “Your initiated name is Giriraj. Giriraj is a name for Govardhana Hill, where Krishna used to tend His cows.

Sometimes devotees take a stone from Govardhana Hill and worship it as Krishna. So I marked it in your person when I was in Boston, and I prayed to Krishna that this good soul may be aware of the importance of Krishna consciousness.”

What is our qualification?

When I look for my qualifications, I don’t find any. Our only qualification is that Srila Prabhupada took compassion on us and gave us his mercy: he prayed to Krishna for us, just as he says in his prayer approaching the Commonwealth Pier.

So, back to Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura’s discussion: Someone could question,

“Why should Krishna listen to the prayers of a devotee? So many people are praying to Krishna; why should Krishna listen especially to a devotee? Is that not also partiality?”

Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura says that of all of Krishna’s qualities, the quality of being affectionate to His devotees, bhakta-vatsalya, is considered the supermost, the emperor that conquers over all the Lord’s other qualities and reconciles all contradictions.

So, being partial to His devotees is not a fault (dusanam) in Krishna, but an ornament (bhusanam)—His most exalted quality.

He has no desire other than to please His devotees. Just as the devotees have no desire other than to please Krishna, Krishna has no desire other than to please them.

So, when a devotee such as Srila Prabhupada prays to Krishna to give mercy to the fallen souls, or to a particular soul, Krishna readily does it. He does it to please His devotee.

Years after my initiation, I found the verses that Srila Prabhupada paraphrased here in verses 6 and 7 from

“The Prayers of the Personified Vedas” from Srimad-Bhagavatam(10.87.14).

The personified Vedas prayed to the Lord, “The fallen souls are under the control of maya, and maya is under Your control. Therefore, if you show them Your mercy, they can be released from the control of maya. We pray that You kindly do so.”

The same verse was quoted by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to Vasudeva Datta. Vasudeva Datta had prayed,

“Let all the sinful reactions of all the living entities in the entire universe fall upon me,” and Lord Chaitanya became overwhelmed with love for Vasudeva Datta and began to tremble and weep out of affection for him.

Generally, we wouldn’t accept the sinful reactions of even one living entity. There is the famous story of Valmiki: Valmiki was a thief, but he wasn’t stealing for himself; he was stealing for the sake of his family.

Then Narada came and exposed the fallacy of mundane family attachment. He spoke to Valmiki’s wife:

“Your husband is stealing for your sake, not for his sake. You are enjoying because he is stealing for you. Will you at least take some share of the sinful reactions?”

“No!” she said. “Why should I? He is the one who is doing the stealing, not me.”

We don’t want to take anyone’s sinful reactions. Just our own sinful reactions are hard enough to tolerate. Yet here Vasudeva Datta is saying that he will take the reactions for every living entity in the whole universe.

We cannot even conceive of how much suffering he would have to undergo, but he offered, “Let me suffer in a hellish condition perpetually.” And he spoke without duplicity.

Sometimes we may say things to sound good, to say the right thing, to sound like an advanced devotee. But Vasudeva Datta was serious.

Thus, when Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu heard what he said, His heart melted and He told Vasudeva Datta, “You need not suffer their sinful reactions.

They can be liberated by your desire alone. Krishna fulfills the desires of His pure devotees. So by your desire He can liberate them without your accepting their sinful reactions.”

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu quoted the same verse from “The Prayers of the Personified Vedas”: “O Lord, kindly conquer the nescience of the living entities by Your grace.”

So, from one point of view, this is the secret: In his sincere love and compassion, and in his intimate relationship with Krishna, Srila Prabhupada prayed for us, and Krishna reciprocated.

But again, what is the method by which we get the mercy? Srila Prabhupada wrote, “So I prayed to Krishna that this soul may be aware of the importance of Krishna consciousness.”

In other words, we must become aware of the value of Krishna consciousness and then take to the process that Srila Prabhupada gave us.

Thus we come to the second part of Verse 7: “If You so desire their deliverance, then only will they be able to understand Your message.”

Many people heard Srila Prabhupada’s message, or Krishna’s message, but not all developed faith in it.

The beginning of bhakti is faith (adau sraddha). Thus, when we ask how one gets bhakti, we really mean how one gets sraddha, which is bhakti in its initial stage.

Here “faith” means faith in the words of the scriptures and the words of the spiritual master that glorify and explain the process of bhakti.

Srila Prabhupada, in utter humility, prayed that Krishna make his words suitable, and he also prayed that Krishna enlighten us, or inspire us, with appreciation for His message.

In the mood of utter surrender, Srila Prabhupada could see that Krishna was doing everything: Krishna was inspiring him to speak, and Krishna was inspiring us to appreciate what he said.

Unified field theory, the deep study of only one part of the material energy known as the "gross material energy". Modern science still have not discover subtle material energy or sub-space where 90% of material universes, including other living entities exist.

Unified field theory, the deep study of only one part of the material energy known as the "gross material energy".

In physics, a unified field theory (UFT) is a type of field theory that allows all that is usually thought of as fundamental forces and elementary particles to be written in terms of a pair of physical and virtual fields.

According to the modern discoveries in physics, forces are not transmitted directly between interacting objects, but instead are described and interrupted by intermediary entities called fields.

Classically, however, a duality of the fields is combined into a single physical field within the realm of gross material matter.

For over a century, unified field theory remains an open line of research and the term was coined by Albert Einstein, who attempted to unify his general theory of relativity with electromagnetism .

However, his reseach from a higher level of knowledge, is severely restricted to just the gross material realm.

Even the Large Hadron Collider can only percieve "gross matter" also and CANNOT detect "subtle matter" in Sub-space because anything made of "gross matter" cannot detect subtle matter.

This is also why life outside this Earth planet is difficult to find, this is because all the higher and lower planetary systems, all exist in sub-space

This is because they are made of "subtle matter" which is NOT percievable or detected by "gross matter" like our biological material bodily vessels and all gross material technology related around it.

The "Theory of Everything" therefore is NOT "Everything" because it does NOT reveal the vast number of "subtle worlds" and then the "higher spiritual anti-material perpetual realities" that exist known as Vaikuntha and Goloka Vrindavana.

On the gross material limited level, the "Theory of Everything" and "Grand Unified Theory"  are closely related to unified field theory, but differ by not requiring the basis of nature to be fields, and often by attempting to explain the physical constants of "gross material nature" only.

Earlier primitive attempts based on classical physics are described in the article on classical unified field theories.

The goal of a unified field theory has led to a great deal of progress for future theoretical physics on the "gross material level only" and progress continues in the realm of gross material energy but still modern science are yet to discover subtle matter or sub-space.
