The cow herd boys and girls of Vrindavana overlooked the presence of the 4 armed Lord Visnu Form when they went looking for their dear friend Kṛṣṇa. There only interest was Krsna.

The Vaikuntha planets are very, very different from Goloka-Vrindavana as seen in there two paintings below.

The "first" painting is what the Vaikuntha planets look like, where all jiva-souls there can voluntarily choose to have a 4 armed male bodily form almost exactly like Lord Visnus, and the females have a 4 armed bodily form like Luxmi, and worship Them as the Supreme Personalities of Godhead.

The "second" painting is what Goloka-Vrindavana looks like, where all inhabitants (male and female) there can voluntarily choose to have a two-armed bodily form similar to Krsna's form.

The inhabitants there do not see Krsna as God, they see Him as their dear friend, family member and lover.

Once in Goloka-Vrindavana the cow herd boys and gopis went looking for Kṛṣṇa and Krsna played a trick on them, He turned Himself into the 4 armed Visnu form who resides on the Vaikuntha planets.

When the cowherd boys and gopis saw Visnu they ignored Him, showed no interest, just walked straight past Him continuing their search for child Krsna.

To them no one matches Krsna's amazing beauty, or comes close to the feeling they have for Krsna, not even Visnu, who they had no interest in at all.

The inhabitants of Vrindavana ignored the presents of the 4 armed Visnu when looking for their dear friend Kṛṣṇa (from Srimad Bhagavatam)

There are very important quotes by Srila Prabhupada in the following offering.

Thank you, Śrīla Prabhupāda, for giving us so much vast knowledge and wisdom explaining the real meaning of surrender, devotion and love.

You have taught us the following:

Srila Prabhupada - "The "immediate" expansions of the Lord are called svāṁśa or personal direct expansions (Visnu-tattva who are Krsna playing another role in His own pastimes) The "separated" expansions of the Lord are called vibhinnāṁśa - (jiva-tattva) or independent jiva-souls like us." (taken from BG 10.37, Purport)

Śrīla Prabhupāda - "So everyone can know that independence means one can use it properly, or one can misuse it. That is independence. If you make it one way only that is not independence, that is force." (Los Angeles, June 23, 1975)

Śrīla Prabhupāda - "Unless there is a possibility of misusing our free will, there is no question of freedom." (Dialectical Spiritualism, Critique of Descartes)

Ultimately each individual jiva-soul is a unique PERSON who can choose for themselves how to voluntarily serve Kṛṣṇa the Supreme Personality of Godhead and cause of all causes, or ignore Him if they choose to do so.

As Prabhupāda explains, Kṛṣṇa never forces the jīva-souls to surrender to Him, never forces them to love Him, that must be voluntary expressed in a "two-way" exchange otherwise love can never exist without those voluntary exchanges.

Srila Prabhupada - "Free will means that you can act wrongly. That is free will. Unless there is chance of doing wrong or right, there is no question of free will. Where is free will then? If I act only one sided, that means I have no free will. Because we act sometimes wrongly, that means free will."

Hayagriva - "A man may know better but still act wrongly."

Srila Prabhupada - "Yes, but that is free will. He misuses his. Just like a thief, he knows that his stealing, it is bad, but still he does it. That is free will. He cannot check his greediness, so in spite of his knowing that he is doing wrong thing—he will be punished, he knows; he has seen another thief, he was punished, he was put into prison— everything he knows, but still he steals. Why? Misuse of free will. Unless there is misuse of free will, there is no question of free will." (Discussions with Srila Prabhupada and Rene Descartes)

Srila Prabhupada - "The jiva-soul's position in the spiritual world is voluntary. Some devotee wants to serve Kṛṣṇa as flower; they become flower there. If I want that "As a flower I shall lie down at the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa," he becomes flower, voluntarily, and he can change his, from flower to human body. That is spiritual life. There is no restriction. If some devotee wants to serve Kṛṣṇa as cow, he serves Kṛṣṇa as cow, as calf, as flower, as plant, as water, as ground, field, or as father, as mother, as friend, as beloved, anything. It is inconceivable, yet a fact." (SB Canto 6 Ch 1 text 1-4 - Melb, May 20, 1975)

Śrīla Prabhupāda - "Unless there are ‘two persons’, where is the question of love? . . . Love means ‘two persons’, . . . then there is exchange, . . . then there is love.” (Aug 9, 1976, Tehran)

Devotion, surrender and genuine loving selfless service can only exist when ‘two’ are involved in a ‘two-way’ trade off based on a reciprocal relationship of loving exchanges.

The experience of loving exchanges between the devotee, guru and Kṛṣṇa can never exist in a selfish, inconsiderate ‘one-way’ forceful domineering impersonal way.

In other words, loving expressions and exchanges can never exist in a dictatorial forceful one-sided relationship of just being told what to do, without the jīva-souls having their own personal voluntary contributions and offerings in Goloka Vṛndāvana and Vaikuṇṭha too.

Śrīla Prabhupāda - “Kṛṣṇa never forces you to love Him, that must be voluntary.” (Melb, June 25, 1974)

This is because loving devotion, obedience, trust and loyalty between Kṛṣṇa and His devotee is never a "one-way affair" in the spiritual planets, it is always a "two-way" voluntary loving affair of intimate exchanges and reciprocation.

Of course in the material creation under the guidance of a bona fide spiritual master, the conditioned jiva-soul is being trained up to always remember Kṛṣṇa.

Therefore such strict (sometimes even forceful instructions by the genuine spiritual master) are meant to help the embodied jīva-soul wake up from their material conditioning and realize that real freedom is always voluntarily serving Krsna.

This should be understood properly by realizing the difference between the restricted material creation where free will almost does not exist and one’s full freedom in the spiritual worlds.

Loving devotional service can only truly exist when the conditioned jīva-souls are trained up to eventually reach their full potential and original position as Kṛṣṇa’s pure devotee, where they naturally express their constitutional nature being Krsna's "marginal living entity", who always reciprocates with Kṛṣṇa in a "two-way" exchange of loving intimacy.

Only then can love or service be genuinely expressed in a natural two-way relationship of based on reciprocal exchanges between Kṛṣṇa and the individual jīva-souls.

A relationship ‘between two’ can only experience love, and that is why Kṛṣṇa gave the jīva-souls their freedom (free will) in the first place.

The full expression or potential of the individual jīva-souls (marginal living entities) is only fully expressed, experienced and realized in the spiritual worlds by expressing their free will in full, and not while in a temporary material bodily vessel in the restricted temporary material worlds (massive Brahmanda universes)

Surrendering to Kṛṣṇa is enriched and further enhanced by the jīva-soul’s personal unique loving voluntary contributions of unique service Prabhupāda taught us.

Such unique voluntary service increases, enriches and magnifies the relationship of loving exchanges and reciprocation eternally between Kṛṣṇa and the jīva-souls in a "two-way" exchange of feelings.

Kṛṣṇa gave the jīva-souls their freedom (free will) for this purpose of establishing a "two-way" voluntary relationship so they can express personal unique loving feelings experienced differently with each individual jīva-soul.

The fact is, real freedom, or experiencing the full potential of one's (the jīva-souls) personality, is only fully experienced in Goloka Vṛndāvana and Vaikuṇṭha where no one is forced to do anything.

This is because our loving relationship with Kṛṣṇa in the spiritual world is never founded on a demanding forceful relationship with Kṛṣṇa where one is always told what to do, and just obey without personal voluntary contributions (offerings) and intelligent inquiry.

The fact is, mindless impersonal surrender to a so called God or Spiritual Master without being encouraged or nurtured to participate in a relationship with personal contributions or offerings, only exists in a "one-sided" impersonal dominant relationship, where the jīva-soul’s personality and character are artificially restricted and suppressed, is Mayavadi impersonal nonsense.

This means their natural constitution of independent self-expression by choosing their own personal offerings to Kṛṣṇa, is replaced by a "one-sided domineering dictatorship" by being told what to do and think instead being taught how to think act and make one's own decisions.

The spiritual worlds are NOT impersonal like that where one's right of self expression is denied and extinguished.

Śrīla Prabhupāda - "Love means "two-persons". . . I must deal with you open-hearted, you must deal with me open-hearted, then there is love . . . So if you want to love Kṛṣṇa, God, then these things must be there." (Evening darśana, Aug 9, 1976, Tehran)

Love or genuine selfless service is always based on a "two-way" exchange of feelings and never a "one-way or one-sided" dictatorship masquerading as the real meaning  of "surrender."

This means each jīva-soul can voluntarily make their own individual contributions and express their own independent individuality because they have free will.

Śrīla Prabhupāda - "Kṛṣṇa does not want to become a lover like that, forced to love Him on the point of revolver. ‘You love me, otherwise I shall kill you!’ That is not love; that is threatening. Love is reciprocal, voluntary, good exchange of feeling. Then there is love. Not by force; that is rape. Why one is called lover, another is called rape?" (July 8, 1976 in Washington, D.C.)

Serving Kṛṣṇa is not impersonal in anyway, meaning it is never a "one-sided" affair or a domineering forceful relationship of always being told what to do and what to think instead being encouraged to think for yourself.

Surrender to Kṛṣṇa does not mean giving up your intelligence, free will, individuality and the awareness of being an independent unique PERSON you are eternally, who can choose to voluntarily serve Kṛṣṇa with personal contributions, or even ignore Kṛṣṇa if they choose to do so.

For free will to truly exist, both choices must exist.

Such choices must always be there in the spiritual worlds for free will to truly exist because part of having free will means being able to reject Krsna too as Prabhupada explains above.

Goloka Vṛndāvana and Vaikuṇṭha are not totalitarian (oppressive) abodes for the individual jīva-souls in their relationship with Kṛṣṇa or Viṣṇu.

No, the Kingdom of God is not like that, there are always loving exchanges of feelings, respect and service based on reciprocation and cooperation between Kṛṣṇa and His dear devotees.

Without this free will and the ability to reciprocate, the jīva-souls or marginal living entities are no better than dead stone that can never receive or give love.

Śrīla Prabhupāda - "If you have no free will, then you are a stone. The stone has no free will. You want to be stone Then you must have free will! But don’t misuse your free will. But don’t try to become stone either. That is not life." (Aug 5, 1976, New Mayapur, France)

The spiritual worlds of Vaikuṇṭha and Goloka Vṛndāvana are personal Kingdoms based on loving exchanges and cooperation between Kṛṣṇa and His devotees, as said above, it is never a "one-way" mindless Kingdom.

Ultimately we are all Kṛṣṇa’s eternal servants and very dear friends, however, that does not mean we have to give up our free will and individuality under the heading of surrender.

Śrīla Prabhupāda - "Love is reciprocal, voluntary, good exchange of feeling. Then there is love. Not by force, no, Kṛṣṇa does not want to become a lover like that, ‘You love me, otherwise I shall kill you!" (Washington, DC, July 8, 1976)

Vipina Purandara - "Why doesn’t Kṛṣṇa protect me from thinking independently from Him?"

Srila Prabhupada - "That means you lose your independence. That is force, in Bengali it is said, ‘If you catch one girl or boy, ‘You love me, you love me, you love me.’ ” Is it love? “You love me, otherwise I will kill you!’ Is that love?" (July 8, 1976 in Washington, D.C.)

As already explained, free will in its full potential only fully exists in Vaikuṇṭha and Goloka Vṛndāvana and is greatly restricted in the material creation.

The conclusion is, of course free will exists fully in Goloka Vṛndāvana and Vaikuṇṭha because it is part and parcel of the constitutional make up of the marginal living entities (jiva-souls).

And Kṛṣṇa always allows free will in Goloka Vṛndāvana and Vaikuṇṭha because if He didn’t, then loving exchanges would never exist.

If Kṛṣṇa denied the jīva-souls their free will, then they could never experience love, or know what love is, it would be just a "one sided" dominated loveless impersonal affair.

Therefore, love is always a "two-way" exchange of feelings, it is never one way or one-sided affair because as said above, relationships expressed in a "one-sided" dominance is not love at all, it is impersonalism and slavery.

Without free will, without being allowed to contribute personal offerings and having independent choices, even though fully dependent on Kṛṣṇa, the jīva-soul can never experience wonderful loving exchanges of reciprocation, and offering personal unique individual contributions to Kṛṣṇa.

Free will or the ability to choose is eternally part and parcel of the jīva-soul’s (marginal living entities) natural constitution and aways exists without beginning or end.

As said above, this means the jīva-souls can choose to serve Kṛṣṇa, or even reject Him if they want, it is their choice and always has been.

This is one of the reasons why part of the Spiritual Sky (25%) is the material creation.

Krsna allows the jiva-souls to choose to go to the material creation if they voluntarily no longer want to serve Kṛṣṇa however, their real home is always Vaikuntha or Goloka Vrindavana that makes up 75% of the Spiritual Sky.

Therefore Kṛṣṇa does not force the jīva-souls to surrender to Him, if He did, then that is not love, it is forced loveless obedience.

As Prabhupada says above, if you catch a girl or boy, then force them to love and serve you, is that love? "Love me otherwise I will kill you!" No, Kṛṣṇa does not want to be a cruel lover like that, forced to serve by the point of gun.

The amazing thing is, Kṛṣṇa always serves (loves) His pure devotees far more than they can ever serve Him!!

The individual jiva-souls (marginal living entities) can never exist independently from Krsna even though they can express their independent free will that Krsna provides separately for the purpose of allowing "two-way" voluntary exchanges of loving expressions and encouraging unique personal offerings.

Thank you Śrīla Prabhupāda for inspiring all these realizations based on your teachings..^..

So many gurus came from India to the United States in the 1960s claiming to be God or God's representative.

In 1968 Srila Prabhupada was interviewed by a journalist with concerns about the many so called gurus coming to America from India claiming to be God or His representative.

Journalist - "I think an awful lot of our readers, and people in the United States are terribly confused with the many people claiming to be gurus, spiritual teachers, yoga masters and gods and who pop up in this country, one after the other, after the other, and they say that."

Srila Prabhupada - "I can declare that they are all nonsense!"

Journalist - "I wonder if you could elaborate on that a little bit."

Srila Prabhupada - "I can say, furthermore, they're all rascals."

Journalist - "For example, the famous one who sells meditation mantras and took the Beatles to india?"

Srila Prabhupada - "He is rascal number one. I say it publicly."

Journalist - "Could you explain, give me a little background on that and why, because our readers."

Srila Prabhupada - "From his behavior I can understand he is rascal number one. I do not want to know about him, but what he has done makes it obvious.

But the wonderful thing is that people in the Western countries are supposed to be so advanced how they are befooled by these rascals?"

Journalist - "Well, I think that people are looking for something, and he comes along."

Srila Prabhupada - "Yes, but they want something very cheap that is their fault. Now, for our disciples, we don't give anything cheap.

Our first condition is character moral character. You see? Unless one is strictly following moral principles, we don't initiate him, we don't allow him in this institution.

And this so-called guru has been telling people, "Just do whatever you like. You simply pay me thirty-five dollars, and I'll give you a mantra." You see?

So people want to be cheated, and so many cheaters come. People do not wish to undergo any discipline. They have got money, so they think, "We shall pay and immediately we'll get whatever we want."

Journalist - "Instant heaven."

Srila Prabhupada - "Yes, that is their foolishness."

Journalist - "Let me ask you I have my opinion, but let me ask you why do you feel that the younger people today are turning more and more toward the Eastern-oriented religions?"

Srila Prabhupada - "Because your materialistic way of life no longer satisfies them. In America you have enough for enjoyment, you have enough food, enough women, enough wine, enough houses enough of everything.

But still you have confusion and dissatisfaction more in your country than in India, which is said to be poverty-stricken.

But you'll find in India that although they are poverty-stricken, they are continuing their old spiritual culture. So the people are not as disturbed. This shows that material advancement alone cannot give one satisfaction.

So it is necessary now that people should take to spiritual life, that will make them happy.

All these people they are in darkness. There is no hope, they do not know where they are going; they have no aim.

But when you are spiritually situated, you know what you are doing and where you are going. Everything is clear."

Journalist - "In other words, you feel that the Western oriented church whether it be a synagogue, Catholic church, Church of England or whatever has failed to present spiritual life.

Would you say that their message is not relevant? Or is it that they have failed to present their message properly?"

Srila Prabhupada - "Take the Bible, it was spoken long, long ago to primitive people who were living in the desert. These people were not very advanced.

So at that time, in the old Testament, it was sufficient to say, "There is a God, and God created the world." That is a fact.

But now people are scientifically advanced, and they want to know in detail how the creation has taken place. You see?

And that detailed, scientific explanation is NOT there in the Bible. And the church can't give any more than that, they have no explanation on what God looks like.

Therefore people are not satisfied, simply officially going to the church and offering prayers does not appeal to them.

Besides that, these so-called religious leaders are not following even the most basic religious principles.

For instance, in the old Testament there are the Ten Commandments, and one commandment is "Thou shalt not kill." But killing is very prominent in the Christian world.

These nonsense religious leaders are sanctioning slaughterhouses, and they have manufactured a theory that animals have no soul. "Give the dog a bad name and hang it."

So when we ask, "Why are you committing this sinful act of killing?" the priests refuse to discuss the matter. Everyone is silent.

That means they are deliberately disobeying the Ten Commandments. So where are the religious principles? It is plainly stated, "Thou shalt not kill." Why are they killing? How do you answer?"

Journalist - "Are you asking me?"

Srila Prabhupada - "Yes."

Journalist - "Well, "Thou shalt not kill" is obviously an ethic … and it's timeless, and it's valid. But man is not really interested."

Srila Prabhupada - "Yes, that's right. They are not really interested in religion. It is simply show-bottle. If you do not follow the regulative principles, then where is your religion?"

Journalist - "I'm not arguing with you. I couldn't agree with you more. I'm in total agreement. It doesn't make any sense. "Thou shalt not kill." "Thou shalt worship no other gods before Me." "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods." "Thou shalt honor thy father and thy mother."… Those are beautiful."

Srila Prabhupada - "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife" but who is following this?"

Journalist - "Very few."

Srila Prabhupada - "So how can they say they're religious? And without religion, human society is animal society."

Journalist - "All right, but let me ask you this. How does your interpretation differ from the basic Judeo-Christian ethic of the Ten Commandments?"

Srila Prabhupada - "There is no difference. But as I have told you, none of them are strictly following the Ten Commandments. So I simply say, "Please follow God's commandments." That is my message."

Journalist - "In other words, you're asking them to obey those principles."

Srila Prabhupada - "Yes, I don't say that Christians should become Hindu. I simply say, "Please obey your Commandments." I'll make you a better Christian. That is my mission. I don't say, "God is not in your tradition God is only here in ours." I simply say, "Obey God." I don't say, "You have to accept that God's name is Krsna and no other." No. I say, "Please obey God. Please try to love God."

Journalist - "Let me put it this way. If your mission and the mission of the Western Judeo-Christian ethic are the same, again let me ask, Why is it that the younger people, or people in general, are disenchanted, are trying to go toward the Eastern-oriented religions? Why are they going toward the Eastern if both are the same?"

Srila Prabhupada - "Because Judaism and Christianity are not teaching them practically. I am teaching them practically."

Journalist - "In other words, you're teaching them what you feel is a practical, everyday method for attaining this fulfillment of man's spirit."

Srila Prabhupada - "Love of Godhead is being taught both in the Bible and in the Bhagavad-gita. But today's religionists are not actually teaching how to love God. I am teaching people how to love God that is the difference. Therefore, young people are attracted."

Journalist - "All right, so the end is the same, but it's the method of getting there that's different?"

Srila Prabhupada - "No the end is the same and the method is also the same. But these so-called religious leaders are not teaching people to follow the method. I am teaching them practically how to follow it."

Journalist - "Let me ask you something that we've run into a great deal just recently. The biggest problem holding men and women back from love of God and following the Ten Commandments is the problem how should I put it? well, the sexual problem. Now I'm stating something that's obvious. We've all gone through this."

Srila Prabhupada - "Yes, everyone."

Journalist - "And there is nothing in Western culture or religion that teaches or helps a young person to cope with this difficult problem. I went through it. We all have. Now do you, in your message, give the young people something to hang on to? And if so, what?"

Srila Prabhupada - "I ask my disciples to get married. I don't allow this nonsense of boys living with girl friends. No. "You must get yourself married and live like a gentleman."

Journalist - "Well, let me get a little more basic. How about when one is fourteen-fifteen- sixteen years old?"

Srila Prabhupada - "One thing is that we teach our boys how to become brahmacari how to live the life of celibacy, how to control their senses. In Vedic culture, marriage generally doesn't take place until the boy is about twenty-four or twenty-five and the girl is about sixteen or seventeen.

And because they are experiencing the spiritual pleasure of Krsna consciousness, they are not simply interested in sex life.

So we don't say, "Don't mix with women," or, "Stop sex life." But we regulate everything under the higher principle of Krsna consciousness. In this way everything goes nicely."

Journalist - "So your disciples don't just bite their tongue or their lip and say, "I won't touch her (or him)." There is a substitute?"

Srila Prabhupada - "Yes, a higher taste. That is Krsna consciousness. And it is working: I'm already teaching Western men and women how to control their sexual impulse. My disciples that you see here are all Americans. They are not imported from India."

Journalist - "One thing I want to know is what you think about people like this famous mantra-selling guru, who turned me off and so many other people. My daughter was very involved in that kind of thing for awhile. She's terribly disillusioned."

Srila Prabhupada - "The psychology is that the Western people, especially youngsters, are hankering after spiritual life. Now, if somebody comes to me and says, "Svamiji, initiate me," I immediately say, "You have to follow these four principles no meat-eating, no gambling, no intoxication, and no illicit sex."

Many go away. But this mantra seller he did not put any restrictions. That's just like a physician who says, "You can do whatever you like; you simply take my medicine and you'll be cured." That physician will be very popular."

Journalist - "Yes, he'll kill a lot of people, but he'll be very well liked."

Srila Prabhupada - "Yes, [Laughs.] and a real physician says, "You cannot do this. You cannot do that. You cannot eat this." This is a botheration for people.

They want something very cheap. Therefore the cheaters come and cheat them. They take the opportunity because people want to be cheated.

"Oh, let us take advantage!" You see? So the rascals advise people, "You are God everyone is God. You just have to realize yourself you have simply forgotten. You take this mantra, and you'll become God. You'll become powerful.

There is no need to control the senses. You can drink. You can have unrestricted sex life and whatever you like."

People like this. "Oh, simply by fifteen minutes meditation I shall become God, and I have to pay only thirty-five dollars." Many millions of people will be ready to do it.

For Americans, thirty-five dollars is not very much. But multiplied by a million, it becomes thirty-five million dollars. [Laughs.]

We cannot bluff like that. We say that if you actually want spiritual life, you have to follow the restrictions. The commandment is, "You shall not kill."

So I shall not say, "Yes, you can kill the animal has no feeling, the animal has no soul." We cannot bluff in this way, you see."

Journalist - "This kind of thing has disenchanted an awful lot of young people."

Srila Prabhupada - "So please try to help us. This movement is very nice. It will help your country. It will help the whole human society. It is a genuine movement. We are not bluffing or cheating. It is authorized."

Journalist - "Authorized by whom?"

Srila Prabhupada - "Authorized by Krsna, God. In India this Krsna consciousness philosophy has millions and millions of followers eighty percent of the population. If you ask any Indian he will be able to tell you so many things about Krsna consciousness."

Journalist - "Do you really think, from a very practical standpoint, that your movement has a chance to make it here in America?"

Srila Prabhupada - "From what I've seen it has a great chance. We don't say, "Give up your religion and come to us." We say, 'At least follow your own principles. And then if you want to, study with us.'

Sometimes it happens that although students have received their M.A. degree, they go to foreign universities to study more. Why does it happen? They want more enlightenment.

Similarly, any religious scripture you may follow will give you enlightenment. But if you find more in this Krsna consciousness movement, then why should you not accept it?

If you are serious about God, why should you say, "Oh, I am Christian," "I am Jewish," "I cannot attend your meeting"?

Why should you say, "Oh, I cannot allow you to speak in my church"? If I am speaking about God, what objection can you have?"

Journalist - "Well, I couldn't agree with you more."

Srila Prabhupada - "I am prepared to talk with any God conscious man. Let us chalk out a program so that people may be benefited. But they want to go on in their stereotyped way.

If we see that by following a particular type of religious principle one is developing love of God, that is first-class religion. But if one is merely developing his love for mammon, then what kind of religion is that?"

Journalist - "Right you are."

Srila Prabhupada - "That is our test you have to develop love for God. We don't say that you must follow Christianity, or Muhammadanism, or Judaism, or Hinduism.

We simply look to see whether you are developing your love of Godhead. But they say, "Who is God? I am God." You see? Everyone is taught nowadays that everyone is God."

Journalist - "Have you seen pictures of a smiling man with a mustache and a pushed-in nose? Before he died, he said he was God."

Srila Prabhupada - "He was God? He was another rascal. Just see this is going on. He was making propaganda that he was God. That means that people do not know what God is. Suppose I come to you and say that I am the President of the United States. Will you accept me?"

Journalist - "[Laughs.] No, I don't think I would."

Srila Prabhupada - "These rascals! The people are accepting them as God because they do not know what God is that is the problem."

Journalist - "It's just absolutely absurd that somebody comes along and tells you he's God."

Srila Prabhupada - "But whoever accepts him as God is just as much a rascal. The man who says he's God he's rascal number one. He's a cheater.

And the man who is cheated he's also a rascal. He does not know what God is. He thinks that God is so cheap that you can find Him in the marketplace."

Journalist - "Of course, the Western concept is that man is created in the image of God. Consequently, God must look somewhat like man."

Srila Prabhupada - "You have got so many scientists. So just find out what the actual image of God is, what His form is really like. Where is that department?

You have got so many departments research department, technology department. But where is that department that researches what God is? Is there any such department of knowledge?"

Journalist - "There's no God department working tonight I'll tell you that right now."

Srila Prabhupada - "That is the difficulty. But the Krsna consciousness movement is the department of how to know God. If you study with us, then you'll not accept any rascal as God. You'll accept only God as God. We are teaching about another nature beyond this material nature.

This material nature is coming into existence and again dissolving, but God and His spiritual nature are eternal. We living entities are also eternal without any end or any beginning.

This Krsna consciousness movement is teaching how we can transfer ourselves to that eternal, spiritual nature where God is residing."

Journalist - "That's man's quest."

Srila Prabhupada - "Yes, that is the quest. Everyone is trying to be happy, because that is the living entity's prerogative. He is meant by nature to be happy, but he does not know where he can be happy.

He is trying to be happy in a place where there are four miserable conditions namely birth, old age, disease, and death. The scientists are trying to be happy and make other people happy. But what scientist has stopped old age, disease, death, and rebirth? Has any scientist succeeded?"

Journalist - "I don't think so."

Srila Prabhupada - "So what is this? Why do they not consider, "We have made so much improvement, but what improvement have we made in these four areas?"

They have not made any. And still they are very much proud of their advancement in education and technology. But the four primary miseries remain as they are. You see?

The scientists may have made advancements in medicine, but' is there any remedy that can allow us to claim, "Now there is no more disease"? Is there any such remedy?

No. So then what is the scientists' advancement? Rather, disease is increasing in so many new forms.

They have invented nuclear weapons. What good is that? Simply for killing. Have they invented something so that no more men will die? That would be to their credit.

But people are dying at every moment, and the scientists have simply invented something to accelerate their death. That is all. Is that to their credit? So there is still no solution to death.

And they are trying to stop overpopulation. But where is their solution? Every minute the population is increasing by three persons. These are the statistics.

So there is no solution for birth. There is no solution for death. There is no solution for disease. And there is no solution for old age.

Even a great scientist like Professor Einstein had to undergo old age and death. Why could he not stop old age? Everyone is trying to remain youthful, but what is the process? The scientists do not care to solve this problem because it is beyond their means.

They are giving some kind of bluff, that's all. But Krsna consciousness is the solution, and the whole thing is described in Bhagavad-gita. Let them try to understand it. At least let them make an experiment." (Talk with Journalist 1968 San Francisco).^.

Explaining the mysterious spherical material universal shells known as "Brahmandas" coming from the breathing and skin pores of Kāraṇodakaśāyī Viṣṇu or Maha-Visnu, and the inner "secondary universe" that is deep inside each Brahmanda universe.

All the material universes (Brahmandas) originate from the Body of Maha-Visnu via the pores of His skin and His breathing.

The other 3/4s of the Spiritual Sky are the perpetual "forever youthful and fresh" Vaikuntha planets where Viṣṇu/Narayana eternally reside, and Krsna's massive central planet called Goloka-Vrindavana.

The material universes or individual Brahmandas, are an unlimited number of universes that take up 1/4 of the Spiritual Sky.

All Brahmandas come from the Body Maha-Visnu and make up the vast material universe known as the mahat-tattva.

Furthermore, each massive Brahmanda universe encases a smaller secondary universe within it where Garbhodakashayi Visnu and Brahma resides.

There are billions of Garbhodakashayi Visnus and Lord Brahmas, but there is only one Maha-Visnu in the material creation.

Brahma goes on to create or build His many planetary systems within his particular universe.

So deep inside all the billions of Brahmanda universes, is a secondary material universe where Garbhodakashayi Visnu, Lord Brahma and His various demigods (administrators) reside.

Our Lord Brahma has 4 heads making our inner material universe very small at only 4 billion miles in diameter.

Other Lord Brahmas in other  universes inside their Brahmanda have 10 or 100 or 1000, 10,000, 1000,000 or 1000,000 heads or more!

This is inconceivable to our small brains.

This means the Brahmanda universe encasing our inner universe is very small compared to other Brahmanda universes.

There are billions of Garbhodakashayi Visnus and Brahmas and demigods but only one Maha-Visnu.

For some scholars and devotees, our "secondary material universe" inside our surrounding Brahmanda, almost matches the size of Bhu-Mandala, which is described as being close to 4 billion miles in diameter. (5th Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam)

For example, our material universe takes up the area Bhu-Mandala covers which Bhagavatam says is almost 4 billion miles in diameter.

It is also explained in Srimad Bhagavatam that the secondary material universe inside our Brahmanda is one of the smallest, being only 4 billion miles (500,000,000 Yojanas) in diameter.

One yojana equals 8 miles, so 500 million yojanas multiplied by 8 equals 4 billion miles.

There are 14 planetary systems in our 4 billion mile diameter universe, but the amount of planetary systems are different in other universes because they are much larger.

Within the stem of the lotus flower coming from the naval of Garbhodakashayi Visnu, there are fourteen divisions of planetary systems created by Lord Brahma, and our earth spherical global planet is situated in the middle of the stem.

Srila Prabhupada - "We have to imagine that these universes (Brahmandas), which according to our limited knowledge are expanded unlimitedly, are so great that the gross and subtle ingredients—the five elements of the cosmic manifestation, namely

1 - Earth,

2 - Water,

3 - Fire,

4 - Air,

5 - Sky,

6 - Total material energy,

7 - False ego.

All are not only part of the material universe but also encase our material universe with seven material layers of material qualities. Each layer is ten times bigger than the previous one.

In this way, each and every material universe is very securely packed, and there are numberless Brahmanda universes and their inner secondary universes. All the Brahmanda universes float within the innumerable pores of the transcendental body of Mahā-Viṣṇu.

It is stated that just as the atoms and particles of dust are floating within the air along with the birds and their number cannot be calculated, so innumerable universes are floating within the pores of the transcendental body of the Lord. For this reason, the Vedas say that God is beyond the grasp of our knowledge." (Adapted from Krsna Book 87)

We also cannot see from one universe to another.

This is because our individual universe is surrounded and encased by 7 thick material layers that makes up our outer Brahmanda universe.

It is impossible to see the millions of other Brahmandas outside our inner universe (we are inside a massive Brahmanda) because of being surrounded by 7 thick material layers.

However there are rare mystic yogis and advanced devotees like Arjuna who can see though these seven massive layers and pass through.

The distance from the outer edge of our inner material universe to the external of the surrounding Brahmanda is 44 quadrillion, 444 trillion, 444 billion miles in diameter, or twice that size if the entire diameter of the Brahmanda is measured.

So of course Krsna and Arjuna did not encounter such limitations we experience by the combination of these elements like earth, water, fire, air all gross elements as Bhagavad Gita As It Is explains.

Srila Prabhupada - "The Lord is not visible to the eyes of ordinary men, those who are beyond the covering layers because of their transcendental devotional service can still see Him." (Krsna Book 87)

As said above, we cannot see through our Brahmanda's 7 layers of material energy that surrounds and encases our small secondary material universe within it with our telescopes and radio telescopes.

Srila Prabhupada explains further - "Lord Krsna and Arjuna crossed over the great region of darkness covering the material universes. Arjuna then saw the effulgence of light known as the brahmajyoti. The brahmajyoti is situated outside the covering of the material universes, and because it cannot be seen with our present eyes, this brahmajyoti is sometimes called avyakta." (Krsna Book, 89)

Srila Prabhupada - "Each universe is covered by various layers of material elements (The 7 layers of the outer Brahmanda covering), and therefore although the universes are clustered together, we cannot see from one universe to another. In other words, whatever we see is within this one universe. In each universe there is one Lord Brahmā, and there are other demigods on other planets, but there is only one sun." (SB Canto 5 Ch 21 Text 11, Purport)

Srila Prabhupāda - "Every universe is covered by seven layers—earth, water, fire, air, sky, the total energy and false ego—each ten times greater than the previous one. There are innumerable universes besides this one, and although they are unlimitedly large, they move about like atoms in You. Therefore You are called unlimited [ananta]. This verse describes the coverings of the universe (saptabhir daśa-guṇottarair aṇḍa-kośaḥ)." (SB Canto 6, Ch 16, Text 37)

As said above there are 7 material layers of the greater Brahmanda universe that encase our 4 billion diameter inner secondary material universe.

Each layer is 10 times thicker than the previous beginning with multiplying the 4 billion miles diameter of our inner universe by 10 to get the diameter of the first layer which is earth-

1 - Earth - 40 billion miles in diameter,

2 - Water - 400 billion miles in diameter,

3 - Fire - 4000 billion (4 trillion) miles in diameter,

4 - Air - 40,000 billion (40 trillion) miles in diameter,

5 - Sky - 400,000 billion (400 trillion) miles in diameter,

6 - Total material energy - 4000,000 billion (4 quadrillion) miles in diameter.

7 - False ego - 40,000,000 billion (40 quadrillion) miles in diameter.

The total size of our Brahmanda that our small 4 billion mile diameter secondary universe is in, is 44 quadrillion 444 trillion 444 billion miles in diameter according to calculations from Canto 5 of Srimad Bhagavatam or possibly even twice that size.

Beginning with the covering of earth, each covering is ten times greater than the previous one. Thus we can only imagine how great and massive each Brahmanda outer universe is, and there are many billions of universes.

Lord Krsna in Bhagavad-gītā As It Is says (BG 10.42)-

athavā bahunaitena

kiṁ jñātena tavārjuna

viṣṭabhyāham idaṁ kṛtsnam

ekāṁśena sthito jagat

"But what need is there, Arjuna, for all this detailed knowledge? With a single fragment of Myself I pervade and support this entire universe."

The entire material world manifests only one fourth of the Supreme Lord's energy. Therefore He is called ananta."

Srila Prabhupada  - "The first puruṣa is the Kāraṇodakaśāyī Viṣṇu. From His skin holes innumerable universes have sprung up. In each and every universe, the puruṣa enters as the Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu.

He is lying within the half of the universe which is full with the water of His body.

And from the navel of Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu has sprung the stem of the lotus flower, the birthplace of Brahmā, who is the father of all living beings and the master of all the demigod engineers engaged in the perfect design and working of the universal order.

Within the stem of the lotus there are fourteen divisions of planetary systems, and the earthly planets are situated in the middle.

Upwards there are other, better planetary systems, and the topmost system is called Brahmaloka or Satyaloka. Downwards from the earthly planetary system there are seven lower planetary systems inhabited by the asuras and similar other materialistic living being." (SB Canto 1 Ch 3 text 2, Purport)

As said above our secondary material universe deep inside our Brahmanda is divided into fourteen planetary systems.

Seven upper planetary systems-

Bhūr,

Bhuvar,

Svar,

Mahar,

Janas,

Tapas,

Satya,

These are all upward planetary systems, one above the other. There are also seven planetary systems downward, known as-

Atala,

Vitala,

Sutala,

Talātala,

Mahātala,

Rasātala,

Pātāla.

Kāraṇodakaśāyī Viṣṇu or Maha-Visnu is the first of the Purushas (controllers)

All the Visnu/Narayana expansions of Krsna including Maha-Visnu, Garbhodakashayi Visnu and Kshirodakashayi Visnu (Paramatma) are expansions of Balarama, the first of Krsna's expansions or incarnations.

For the creation of the material creation there are three Visnu expansions.

1 - Maha-Visnu (Kāraṇodakaśāyī Viṣṇu)

2 - Garbhodakashayi Visnu (Hiraņyagarbha)

3 - Kshirodakashayi Visnu (Paramatma)

Maha-Visnu (Kāraṇodakaśāyī Viṣṇu) creates innumerable massive universes known as Brahmandas.

He lies down in the Causal Ocean on the bed of Ananta Sesha (a snake looking expansion of also Lord Balarama) and initiates the creation by glancing at His personified material energy, Maya.

From Maha-Visnu or Kāraṇodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, comes the other two Visnus, Garbhodakashayi Visnu, also known as Hiraņyagarbha, and Kshirodakashayi Visnu, or Paramatma

Maha-Visnu creates the innumerable "Brahmanda universes" or universal shells in various sizes as said above, each with a secondary smaller universe inside it.

Our Brahmanda universe is small compared to others, said to be 44 quadrillion 444 trillion 444 billion miles in diameter, or double that size if measured from the outer edge of the inner "secondary material universe" inside it.

Garbhodakashayi Visnu enters into each "secondary universe" that is deep inside of each Brahmanda universe.

From His naval a lotus stem grows and a lotus flower appears at its end where Lord Brahma resides.

Our Lord Brahma has 4 heads making our inner universe very small at only 4 billion miles in diameter.

This means the Brahmanda universe encasing our inner material universe is very small compared to other Brahmanda universes.

Ksirodakashayi Visnu (Paramatma) accompanies all jiva-souls who enter the material creation and sits with each jiva-soul in the heart area of the material bodily vessel as Supersoul and also enters into every atom in the material creation.

Wherever their is Ksirodakashayi Visnu, who is also known as Paramatma or Super Soul, there is the jiva-tattva or individual jiva-soul.

The natural full potential of the jiva-soul is to be fully active in the service of Krsna, such a reality is made of anti-matter Prabhupada explains in his Book "Easy Journey to Other Planets."

Revatīnandana - "Srila Prabhupāda you very clearly explained to me once in a letter that if the jiva-soul then goes into the brahmajyoti, he is considered still fallen. Still fallen. Does that means the whole brahmajyoti is composed of fallen souls? You see my question? If I go there, I'm a jīva-soul, and I go to the brahmajyoti I'm still fallen."

Srila Prabhupāda - "Yes."

Revatīnandana - "That means all jīva-souls there are also fallen souls?"

Srila Prabhupāda - "Yes, existence in the impersonal brahman is also within the category of non-Krsna consciousness. Those who are in the brahman effulgence are also in the fallen condition, so there is no question of falling down from a fallen condition. When fall takes place, it means falling down from the non-fallen condition (Goloka-Vrindavana and Vaikuntha). The non-fallen condition is Krsna consciousness." (Letter to Revatinandana, LA 13 June, 1970 and 1971 London)

The jiva-soul's original position is in Goloka-Vrindavana from where they originated from and have the sa bodily features as Krsna-

sat,

cit,

ananda,

vigraha.

Which means-

Eternity,

Knowledge,

Bliss,

Form.

The jiva-souls have a perpetual spiritual bodily form just like Krsna's spiritual body.

The full potential and original feature of all marginal living entities (jiva-souls) is a two-arm form like Krsna's Body.

Devotee – "Is the original body of the spirit soul a human form?"

Srila Prabhupada – "Yes, human form. God is also human form. "Man is made after the shape of God." I think there is in the Bible. Is it not? So God is also like human form. Here you see Krsna, two hands, two legs."

Hari-sauri – "How do we understand, then, that there are peacocks and flowers and trees in the spiritual world? Are these not eternal forms?"

Srila Prabhupada – "[describing material form first]: Yes. They are more covered. Just like if you cover your body with blanket, the hands and legs are invisible. But you are not the blanket.

So the trees and plants, they are more covered. They are not in full manifestation. The human form is the full manifestation of the soul."

Hari-sauri - "They are covered in the spiritual world?"

Srila Prabhupada - "Not in the spiritual world. There that is voluntary.

Some devotee wants to serve Krsna as flower; they become flower there. If I want to be a flower I shall lie down at the lotus feet of Krsna, he becomes flower, voluntarily, and he can change his, from flower to human body.

That is spiritual life. There is no restriction.

If some devotee wants to serve Krsna as cow, he serves Krsna as cow, as calf, as flower, as plant, as water, as ground, field, or as father, as mother, as friend, as beloved, anything. It is inconceivable, yet a fact." (SB Canto 6 Ch 1 text 1-4, Melb, May 20, 1975)*^

The advent of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Sri Krsna Janmastami

The Advent of Lord Krsna Once the world was overburdened by the unnecessary defense force of different kings, who were actually demons, but were posing themselves as the royal order.

At that time, the whole world became perturbed, and the predominating deity of this earth, known as Bhumi, went to see Lord Brahma to tell of her calamities due to the demoniac kings.

Bhumi assumed the shape of a cow and presented herself before Lord Brahma with tears in her eyes.

She was bereaved and was weeping just to invoke the lord's compassion. She related the calamitous position of the earth, and after hearing this, Lord Brahma became much aggrieved, and he at once started for the ocean of milk, where Lord Visnu resides.

Lord Brahma was accompanied by all the demigods headed by Lord Siva, and Bhumi also followed.

Arriving on the shore of the milk ocean, Lord Brahma began to pacify the Lord Visnu who formerly saved the earthly planet by assuming the transcendental form of a boar.

In the Vedic mantras, there is a particular type of prayer called Purusa-sukta. Generally, the demigods offer their obeisances unto Visnu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, by chanting the Purusa-sukta.

It is understood herein that the predominating deity of every planet can see the supreme lord of this universe, Brahma, whenever there is some disturbance in his planet.

And Brahma can approach the Supreme Lord Visnu, not by seeing Him directly, but by standing on the shore of the ocean of milk.

There is a planet within this universe called Svetadvipa, and on that planet there is an ocean of milk. It is understood from various Vedic literatures that just as there is the ocean of salt water within this planet, there are various kinds of oceans in other planets.

Somewhere there is an ocean of milk, somewhere there is an ocean of oil, and somewhere there is an ocean of liquor and many other types of oceans.

Purusa-sukta is the standard prayer which the demigods recite to appease the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Ksirodakasayi-Visnu.

Because He is lying on the ocean of milk, He is called Ksirodakasayi-Visnu. He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, through whom all the incarnations within this universe appear.

After all the demigods offered the Purusa-sukta prayer to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, they apparently heard no response.

Then Lord Brahma personally sat in meditation, and there was a message-transmission from Lord Visnu to Brahma. Brahma then broadcast the message to the demigods. That is the system of receiving Vedic knowledge.

The Vedic knowledge is received first by Brahma from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, through the medium of the heart.

As stated in the beginning of Srimad-Bhagavatam, tene brahma hrda: the transcendental knowledge of the Vedas was transmitted to Lord Brahma through the heart.

Here also, in the same way, only Brahma could understand the message transmitted by Lord Visnu, and he broadcast it to the demigods for their immediate action. The message was:

The Supreme Personality of Godhead will appear on the earth very soon along with His supreme powerful potencies, and as long as He remains on the earth planet to execute His mission of annihilating the demons and establishing the devotees, the demigods should also remain there to assist Him.

They should all immediately take birth in the family of the Yadu dynasty, wherein the Lord will also appear in due course of time.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself, Krsna, personally appeared as the son of Vasudeva. Before He appeared, apll the demigods, along with their wives, appeared in different pious families in the world just to assist the Lord in executing His mission.

The exact word used here is tatpriyartham, which means the demigods should appear on the earth in order to please the Lord. In other words, any living entity who lives only to satisfy the Lord is a demigod.

The demigods were further informed that the plenary portion of Lord Krsna, Ananta, who is maintaining the universal planets by extending His millions of hoods, would also appear on earth before Lord Krsna's appearance.

They were also informed that the external potency of Visnu (maya), with whom all the conditioned souls are enamored, would also appear just to execute the purpose of the Supreme Lord.

After instructing and pacifying all the demigods, as well as Bhumi, with sweet words, Lord Brahma, the father of all prajapatis, or progenitors of universal population, departed for his own abode, the highest material planet, called Brahmaloka.

The leader of the Yadu dynasty, King Surasena, was ruling over the country known as Mathura (the district of Mathura), as well as the district known as Surasena.

On account of the rule of King Surasena, Mathura became the capital city of all the kings of the Yadus.

pMathura was also made the capital of the kings of the Yadu dynasty because the Yadus were a very pious family and knew that Mathura is the place where Lord Sri Krsna lives eternally, just as He also lives in Dvaraka.

Once upon a time, Vasudeva, the son of Surasena, just after marrying Devaki, was going home on his chariot with his newly wedded wife.

The father of Devaki, known as Devaka, had contributed a sufficient dowry because he was very affectionate toward his daughter.

He had contributed hundreds of chariots completely decorated with gold equipment. At that time, Kamsa, the son of Ugrasena, in order to please his sister, Devaki, had voluntarily taken the reins of the horses of Vasudeva's chariot and was driving.

According to the custom of the Vedic civilization, when a girl is married, the brother takes the sister and brother-in-law to their home. Because the newly married girl may feel too much separation from her father's family, the brother goes with her until she reaches her father-in-law's house.

The full dowry contributed by Devaka was as follows: 400 elephants fully decorated with golden garlands, 15,000 decorated horses, and 1800 chariots. He also arranged for 200 beautiful girls to follow his daughter.

The ksatriya system of marriage, still current in India, dictates that when a ksatriya is married, a few dozen of the bride's young girlfriends (in addition to the bride) go to the house of the king. The followers of the queen are called maidservants, but actually they act as friends of the queen.

This practice is prevalent from time immemorial, traceable at least to the time before the advent of Lord Krsna 5,000 years ago. So Vasudeva brought home another 200 beautiful girls along with his wife.

While the bride and bridegroom were passing along on the chariot, there were different kinds of musical instruments playing to indicate the auspicious moment.

There were conchshells, bugles, drums and kettledrums; combined together, they were vibrating a nice concert.

The procession was passing very pleasingly, and Kamsa was driving the chariot, when suddenly there was a miraculous sound vibrated from the sky which especially announced to Kamsa: "Kamsa: you are such a fool.

IYou are driving the chariot of your sister and your brother-in-law, but you do not know that the eighth child of this sister will kill you."

Kamsa was the son of Ugrasena, of the Bhoja dynasty. It is said that Kamsa was the most demoniac of all the Bhoja dynasty kings.

Immediately after hearing the prophecy from the sky, he caught hold of Devaki's hair and was just about to kill her with his sword. Vasudeva was astonished at Kamsa's behavior, and in order to pacify the cruel, shameless brother-in-law, he began to speak as follows, with great reason and evidence.

He said, "My dear brother-in-law Kamsa, you are the most famous king of the Bhoja dynasty, and people know that you are the greatest warrior and a valiant king.

How is it that you are so infuriated that you are prepared to kill a woman who is your own sister at this auspicious time of her marriage? Why should you be so much afraid of death?

Death is already born along with your birth. From the very day you took your birth, you began to die. Suppose you are twenty-five years old; that means you have already died twenty-five years.

Every moment, every second, you are dying. Why then should you be so much afraid of death? Final death is inevitable. You may die either today or in a hundred years; you cannot avoid death.

Why should you be so much afraid? Actually, death means annihilation of the present body. As soon as the present body stops functioning and mixes with the five elements of material nature, the living entity within the body accepts another body, according to his present action and reaction.

It is just as when a man walks on the street; he puts forward his foot, and when he is confident that his foot is situated on sound ground, he lifts the other foot. In this way, one after another, the body changes and the soul transmigrates.

See how the plantworms change from one twig to another so carefully! Similarly, the living entity changes his body as soon as the higher authorities decide on his next body.

As long as a living entity is conditioned within this material world, he must take material bodies one after another. His next particular body is offered by the laws of nature, according to the actions and reactions of this life.

"This body is exactly like one of the bodies which we always see in dreams. During our dream of sleep, we create so many bodies according to mental creation.

We have seen gold and we have also seen a mountain, so in a dream we can see a golden mountain by combining the two ideas.

Sometimes in dreams, we see that we have a body which is flying in the sky, and at that time we completely forget our present body. Similarly, these bodies are changing.

When you have one body, you forget the past body. During a dream, we may make contact with so many new kinds of bodies, but when we are awake we forget them all.

And actually these material bodies are the creations of our mental activities. But at the present moment we do not recollect our past bodies.

"The nature of the mind is flickering. Sometimes it accepts something, and immediately it rejects the same thing. Accepting and rejecting is the process of the mind in contact with the five objects of sense gratification: form, taste, smell, sound, and touch.

In its speculative way, the mind comes in touch with the objects of sense gratification, and when the living entity desires a particular type of body, he gets it.

Therefore, the body is an offering by the laws of material nature. The living entity accepts a body and comes out again into the material world to enjoy or suffer according to the construction of the body.

Unless we have a particular type of body, we cannot enjoy or suffer according to our mental proclivities inherited from the previous life.

The particular type of body is actually offered to us according to our mental condition at the time of death.

"The luminous planets like the sun, moon or the stars reflect themselves in different types of reservoirs, like water, oil or ghee.

The reflection moves according to the movement of the reservoir. The reflection of the moon is on the water, and the moving water makes the moon also appear to be moving, but actually the moon is not moving.

Similarly, by mental concoction, the living entity attains different kinds of bodies, although actually he has no connection with such bodies.

But on account of illusion, being enchanted by the influence of maya, the living entity thinks that he belongs to a particular type of body.

That is the way of conditioned life. Suppose a living entity is now in a human form of body. He thinks that he belongs to the human community, or a particular country or particular place.

He identifies himself in that way and unnecessarily prepares for another body which is not required by him. Such desires and mental concoctions are the cause of different types of body.

The covering influence of material nature is so strong that the living entity is satisfied in whatever body he gets, and he identifies with that body with great pleasure.

Therefore, I beg to request you not to be overwhelmed by the dictation of your mind and body."

Vasudeva thus requested Kamsa not to be envious of his newly married sister. One should not be envious of anyone, because envy is the cause of fear both in this world and in the next when one is before Yamaraja (the lord of punishment after death).

Vasudeva appealed to Kamsa on behalf of Devaki, stating that she was his younger sister.

He also appealed at an auspicious moment, at the time of marriage. A younger sister or brother is supposed to be protected as one's children. "The position is overall so delicate," Vasudeva reasoned, "that if you kill her, it will go against your high reputation."

Vasudeva tried to pacify Kamsa by good instruction as well as by philosophical discrimination, but Kamsa was not to be pacified because his association was demoniac.

Because of his demoniac associations, he was always a demon, although born in a very high royal family.

A demon never cares for any good instruction. He is just like a determined thief; one can give him moral instruction, but it will not be effective.

Similarly, those who are demoniac or atheistic by nature can hardly assimilate any good instruction, however authorized it may be. That is the difference between demigod and demon.

Those who can accept good instruction and try to live their lives in that way are called demigods, and those who are unable to take such good instruction are called demons. Failing in his attempt to pacify Kamsa, Vasudeva wondered how he would protect his wife Devaki.

When there is imminent danger, an intelligent person should try to avoid the dangerous position as far as possible.

But if, in spite of endeavoring by all intelligence, one fails to avoid the dangerous position, there is no fault on his part. One should try his best to execute his duties, but if the attempt fails, he is not at fault.

Vasudeva thought of his wife as follows: "For the present let me save the life of Devaki, then later on, if there are children, I shall see how to save them." He further thought,

"If in the future I get a child who can kill Kamsa--just as Kamsa is thinking--then both Devaki and the child will be saved because the law of Providence is inconceivable. But now, some way or other, let me save the life of Devaki."

There is no certainty how a living entity contacts a certain type of body, just as there is no certainty how the blazing fire comes in contact with a certain type of wood in the forest.

When there is a forest fire, it is experienced that the blazing fire sometimes leaps over one tree and catches another by the influence of the wind.

Similarly, a living entity may be very careful and fearful in the matter of executing his duties, but it is still very difficult for him to know what type of body he is going to get in the next life.

Maharaja Bharata was very faithfully executing the duties of self-realization, but by chance he contacted temporary affection for a deer, and he had to accept his next life in the body of a deer.

Vasudeva, after deliberating on how to save his wife, began to speak to Kamsa with great respect, although Kamsa was the most sinful man.

Sometimes it happens that a most virtuous person like Vasudeva has to flatter a person like Kamsa, a most vicious person. That is the way of all diplomatic transactions. Although Vasudeva was deeply aggrieved, he presented himself outwardly as cheerful.

He addressed the shameless Kamsa in that way because he was so atrocious. Vasudeva said to Kamsa,

"My dear brother-in-law, please consider that you have no danger from your sister. You are awaiting some danger because you have heard a prophetic voice in the sky. But the danger is to come from the sons of your sister, who are not present now. And who knows?

There may or may not be sons in the future. Considering all this, you are safe for the present. Nor is there cause of fear from your sister. If there are any sons born of her, I promise that I shall present all of them to you for necessary action."

Kamsa knew the value of Vasudeva's word of honor, and he was convinced by his argument. For the time being, he desisted from the heinous killing of his sister.

Thus Vasudeva was pleased and praised the decision of Kamsa. In this way, he returned to his home.

After due course of time, Vasudeva and Devaki gave birth to eight male children, as well as one daughter.

When the first son was born, Vasudeva kept his word of honor and immediately brought the child before Kamsa.

It is said that Vasudeva was very much elevated and famous for his word of honor, and he wanted to maintain this fame. Although it was very painful for Vasudeva to hand over the newly born child, Kamsa was very glad to receive him.

But he became a little compassionate with the behavior of Vasudeva. This event is very exemplary. For a great soul like Vasudeva, there is nothing considered to be painful in the course of discharging one's duty.

A learned person like Vasudeva carries out his duties without hesitation. On the other hand, a demon like Kamsa never hesitates in committing any abominable action.

It is said, therefore, that a saintly person can tolerate all kinds of miserable conditions of life, a learned man can discharge his duties without awaiting favorable circumstances, a heinous person like Kamsa can act in any sinful way, and a devotee can sacrifice everything to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Kamsa became satisfied by the action of Vasudeva. He was surprised to see Vasudeva keeping his promise, and being compassionate upon him and pleased, he began to speak as follows:

"My dear Vasudeva, you need not present this child to me. I am not in danger from this child. I have heard that the eighth child born of you and Devaki will kill me. Why should I accept this child unnecessarily? You can take him back."

When Vasudeva was returning home with his first-born child, although he was pleased by the behavior of Kamsa, he could not believe in him because he knew that Kamsa was uncontrolled.

An atheistic person cannot be firm in his word of honor. One who cannot control the senses cannot be steady in his determination.

The great politician, Canakya Pandita, said, "Never put your trust in a diplomat or in a woman." Those who are addicted to unrestricted sense gratification can never be truthful, nor can they be trusted with any faith.

At that time the great sage Narada came to Kamsa. He was informed of Kamsa's becoming compassionate to Vasudeva and returning his first-born child. Narada was very anxious to accelerate the descent of Lord Krsna as soon as possible.

He therefore informed Kamsa that personalities like Nanda Maharaja and all the cowherd men and girls and the wives of the cowherd men in Vrndavana, and, on the other side, Vasudeva, his father Surasena and all his relatives born in the family of Vrsni of the Yadu dynasty, were preparing for the appearance of the Lord.

Narada warned Kamsa to be careful of the friends and well-wishers and all the demigods taking birth in those families. Kamsa and his friends and advisors were all demons. Demons are always afraid of demigods. After being thus informed by Narada about the appearance of the demigods in different families Kamsa at once became alert.

He understood that since the demigods had already appeared, Lord Visnu must be coming soon. He at once arrested both his brother-in-law Vasudeva and Devaki and put them behind prison bars.

Within the prison, shackled in iron chains, Vasudeva and Devaki gave birth to a male child year after year, and Kamsa, thinking each of the babies to be the incarnation of Visnu, killed them one after another.

He was particularly afraid of the eighth child, but after the visit of Narada, he came to the conclusion that any child might be Krsna. Therefore it was better to kill all the babies who took birth of Devaki and Vasudeva.

This action of Kamsa is not very difficult to understand. There are many instances in the history of the world of persons in the royal order who have killed father, brother, or a whole family and friends for the satisfaction of their ambitions.

There is nothing astonishing about this, for the demoniac can kill anyone for their nefarious ambitions.

Kamsa was made aware of his previous birth by the grace of Narada. He learned that in his previous birth he was a demon of the name Kalanemi and that he was killed by Visnu.

Having taken his birth in the Bhoja family, he decided to become the deadly enemy of the Yadu dynasty; Krsna was going to take birth in that family, and Kamsa was very much afraid that he would be killed by Krsna, just as he was killed in his last birth.

He first of all imprisoned his father Ugrasena because he was the chief king among the Yadu, Bhoja, and Andhaka dynasties, and he also occupied the kingdom of Surasena, Vasudeva's father. He declared himself the king of all such places.

Thus ends the Bhaktivedanta purport of the First Chapter of Krsna, "Advent of Lord Krsna."
