Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī explains why only Krsna always has 64 qualities in full.

It is to be understood that the aggregate number of qualities of Kṛṣṇa is sixty-four. 

Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī has attempted to give evidences from various scriptures about all sixty-four qualities present in the person of the Supreme Lord Krsna.

Srila Prabhupada - "Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī, after consulting various scriptures, has enumerated the transcendental qualities of the Lord as follows:

(1) beautiful features of the entire body;

(2) marked with all auspicious characteristics;

(3) extremely pleasing;

(4) effulgent;

(5) strong;

(6) ever youthful;

(7) wonderful linguist;

(8) truthful;

(9) talks pleasingly;

(10) fluent;

(11) highly learned;

(12) highly intelligent;

(13) a genius;

(14) artistic;

(15) extremely clever;

(16) expert;

(17) grateful;

(18) firmly determined;

(19) an expert judge of time and circumstances;

(20) sees and speaks on the authority of Vedas, or scriptures;

(21) pure;

(22) self-controlled;

(23) steadfast;

(24) forbearing;

(25) forgiving;

(26) grave;

(27) self-satisfied;

(28) possessing equilibrium;

(29) magnanimous;

(30) religious;

(31) heroic;

(32) compassionate;

(33) respectful;

(34) gentle;

(35) liberal;

(36) shy;

(37) the protector of surrendered souls;

(38) happy;

(39) the well-wisher of devotees;

(40) controlled by love;

(41) all-auspicious;

(42) most powerful;

(43) all-famous;

(44) popular;

(45) partial to devotees;

(46) very attractive to all women;

(47) all-worshipable;

(48) all-opulent;

(49) all-honorable;

(50) the supreme controller.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead has all these fifty transcendental qualities in fullness as deep as the ocean. 

In other words, the extent of His qualities is inconceivable.

As parts and parcels of the Supreme Lord, the individual living entities can also possess all of these qualities in minute quantities, provided they become pure devotees of the Lord. 

In other words, all of the above transcendental qualities can be present in the devotees in minute quantity, whereas the qualities in fullness are always present in the Supreme Personality of Godhead Krsna.

Besides these, there are other transcendental qualities which are described by Lord Śiva to Pārvatī in the Padma Purāṇa, and in the First Canto of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam in connection with a conversation between the deity of the earth and the King of religion, Yamarāja. 

It is said therein, "Persons who are desirous of becoming great personalities must be decorated with the following qualities: 

truthfulness, 

cleanliness, 

mercy, 

perseverance, 

renunciation, 

peacefulness, 

simplicity, 

control of the senses, 

equilibrium of the mind, 

austerity, 

equality, 

forbearance, 

placidity, 

learning, 

knowledge, 

detachment, 

opulence, 

chivalry, 

influence, 

strength, 

memory, 

independence, 

tactfulness, 

luster, 

patience, 

kind-heartedness, 

ingenuity, 

gentility, 

mannerliness, 

determination, 

perfection in all knowledge, 

proper execution, 

possession of all objects of enjoyment, 

gravity, 

steadiness, 

faithfulness, 

fame, 

respectfulness, 

lack of false egotism. 

Persons who are desiring to become great souls cannot be without any of the above qualities, so we can know for certain that these qualities are found in Lord Kṛṣṇa, the supreme soul.

Besides all of the above-mentioned fifty qualities, Lord Kṛṣṇa possesses five more, which are sometimes partially manifested in the persons of Lord Brahmā or Lord Śiva. 

These transcendental qualities are as follows:

(51) changeless;

(52) all-cognizant;

(53) ever fresh;

(54) sac-cid-ānanda (possessing an eternal blissful body - vigraha);

(55) possessing all mystic perfections.

Kṛṣṇa also possesses five other qualities, which are manifest in the body of Nārāyaṇa, and they are listed as follows.

(56) He has inconceivable potency.

(57) Uncountable universes generate from His body.

(58) He is the original source of all incarnations.

(59) He is the giver of salvation to the enemies whom He kills.

(60) He is the attractor of liberated souls. All these transcendental qualities are manifest wonderfully in the personal feature of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Besides these sixty transcendental qualities, Kṛṣṇa has four more, which are not manifest even in the Nārāyaṇa form of Godhead, what to speak of the demigods or living entities. 

They are as follows.

(61) He is the performer of wonderful varieties of pastimes (especially His childhood pastimes).

(62) He is surrounded by devotees endowed with wonderful love of Godhead.

(63) He can attract all living entities all over the universes by playing on His flute.

(64) He has a wonderful excellence of beauty which cannot be rivaled anywhere in the creation.

Adding to the list these four exceptional qualities of Kṛṣṇa, it is to be understood that the aggregate number of qualities of Kṛṣṇa is sixty-four.

Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī has attempted to give evidences from various scriptures about all sixty-four qualities present in the person of the Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa." (Nectar of Devotion 21)

Srila Prabhupada - "It is described that Kṛṣṇa, the enemy of Kaṁsa, has sixty-four transcendental qualities, and all of the ever-liberated souls who accompany the Lord have the first fifty-five of the qualities, without any doubt. 

Such devotees are related to the Supreme Personality of Godhead in any of five transcendental mellows—namely 

neutrality, 

servitorship, 

friendship, 

parenthood 

conjugal love. 

These relationships with the Lord are eternal, and therefore nitya-siddha devotees do not have to strive to attain the perfectional stage by executing regulative devotional principles. They are eternally qualified to serve Kṛṣṇa." (Nectar of Devotion 25)

Srila Prabhupada - "So a Vaiṣṇava devotee of the Lord is expected to have all good qualities. 

The more you become advanced in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, all the good qualities that were covered by the cloud of māyā will come out. Good qualities are already there. 

Just like Kṛṣṇa has got sixty-four good qualities in full, and we are minute particles of Kṛṣṇa; therefore we have got also those good qualities in minute particles. 

But these good qualities are now covered. Just like fire is covered by the ashes. So it does not act. 

Although there is fire, but when it is covered with ashes, it does not act. So we are fire. Kṛṣṇa is fire; we are also fire, in quality. 

There is a very... There is a big fire, blazing fire, and the sparks. The sparks are also fire. 

Therefore we sometimes desire to imitate Kṛṣṇa. 

Because we have got these qualities in minute quantity, so we think that "I am God, I have become." But we do not know the quantitative difference. That we forget. 

We can say we are God, but teeny God, not the Supreme. 

Spark. Fire, blazing fire, and the spark. Now, this quality, fire, this also becomes almost unseen when we are in this material world.

Just like if the fire sparks fall down out of the blazing fire, it becomes extinguished. 

So in order to ignite again our fiery quality, we must go back to the original fire. Then the fiery quality, the brilliant fiery quality, will again be exhibited." (Lecture on SB 2.3.13-14 - Los Srila  Angeles, May 30, 1972)

Srila Prabhupada - "First of all, what is the conception of God? Conception of God is "God is great." 

Nobody is greater than Him, and nobody is equal to Him. That is God. Asama-ūrdhva. 

The exact Sanskrit word is asama-ūrdhva. Asama means "not equal." Nobody can be equal to God. 

This is analyzed by great ācāryas. They have analyzed the characteristics of God. 

They have characterized the characteristic are sixty-four. And out of that sixty-four, we have, we living entities, we have got fifty only. 

And that is also in very minute quantity. 

Fifty qualities of God we have got, but that is in minute quantity. 

Take, for example, just like God has got also the tendency to love young girl. Take it for a crude example. Just like God is dancing with young girls. 

But we have also the same tendency. We also want to be surrounded by young girls and dance, we enjoy. 

But the thing is that you can enjoy in the company of a few girls. That is minute quantity. 

But God can dance with unlimited number of girls. That you cannot. These are crude examples.

So these sixty-four qualities, they have analyzed that we living entities, we have got in minute quantities. 

And amongst the living entities, the highest perfection is to be seen in the life of Brahmā, who is the chief living entity within this universe. 

So similarly, Lord Śiva has got fifty-five. Lord Nārāyaṇa has got sixty. But Kṛṣṇa has got in full sixty-four. Cent percent, hundred percent all the qualities.

Therefore either Lord Śiva or Lord Brahmā or the living entities, nobody can be equal to Him. This is the conception of God." (Lecture on SB 5.5.1 - Los Angeles, January 20, 1969)^^^.

Lord Krsna’s 64 qualities.

Lord Krsna (God) is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and cause of all causes, who has 64 qualities in full all the time.

This means those 64 qualities of Krsna are His full potential, having 100% of His own attributes.

However, His Visnu-tattva expansions known by many names such as Balarama, Ramachandra, Visnu, Narayana, Maha-Visnu, Garbhodakashayi Visnu, Paramatma, Narsingadeva, Vamanadeva and millions of others (also God) have only 60 qualities or attributes out of the full 64, which is 93.75% of Krsna’s qualities.

Some Vedic scholars and academics cannot understand why Krsna has more qualities than Visnu or Narayana, and why Krsna alone IS the original Supreme Personality of Godhead and cause of all causes.

To start with, the Visnu/Narayana expansions of Krsna are NOT the original Form of God. Visnu Narayana forms of God came from Krsna and NOT the other way round as many Hindus wrongly believe.

In other words, Krsna is the original Godhead, NOT Visnu. 

Krsna is NOT an expansion of Visnu because Krsna IS the original Supreme Personality of Godhead and cause of all causes, from whom all Visnu/Narayana Forms originate from.

And the 4 qualities or attributes Visnu or Narayana do not have in full, Krsna always has, and are as follows-

(1) Krsna is the performer of wonderful varieties of pastimes (especially His childhood pastimes).

(2) Krsna is surrounded by devotees endowed with wonderful love of Godhead.

(3) Krsna can attract all living entities all over the universes by playing on His flute.

(4) Krsna has a wonderful excellence of beauty which cannot be rivalled anywhere in the creation.

These four qualities Krsna has in full are important to understand because all Visnu/Narayana forms of God do not have these 4 qualities in full, only sometimes exhibited partially.

Siva-tattva has 55 qualities of Kṛṣṇa 64 qualities which is 85.938% of Krsna's attributes.

Jiva-tattva (the jiva-souls) has 50 qualities of Krsna's 64 qualities which is 78.125% of Krsna's qualities.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Krsna has all sixty four transcendental qualities in full.

So there are four extra qualities Krsna has that not even Visnu/Narayana have but do sometimes partially manifest them.

So for those who ask what is the difference between Krsna (64 qualities) and Visnu/Narayana (60 qualities) read the four extra qualities above that only Krsna has all the time.

In actual fact, the full extent of Krsna’s wonderful qualities are inconceivable.

Here are Krsna’s 64 qualities or attributes-

(1) Beautiful features of the entire body

(2) Marked with all auspicious characteristics

(3) Extremely pleasing

(4) Effulgent

(5) Strong

(6) Ever youthful

(7) Wonderful linguist

(8) Truthful

(9) Talks pleasingly

(10) Fluent

(11) Highly learned

(12) Highly intelligent

(13) Genius

(14) Artistic

(15) Extremely clever

(16) Expert

(17) Grateful

(18) Firmly determined

(19) An expert judge of time and circumstances

(20) Sees and speaks on the authority of Vedas, or scriptures

(21) Pure

(22) Self-controlled

(23) Steadfast

(24) Forbearing

(25) Forgiving

(26) Grave

(27) Self-satisfied

(28) Possessing equilibrium

(29) Magnanimous

(30) Religious

(54) sac-cid-ananda-vigraha that mean eternity-knowledge-bliss-form (as an eternal blissful spiritual bodily individual PERSON) 

(55) Possessing all mystic perfections.

(56) He has inconceivable potency.

(57) Uncountable universes generate from His body.

(58) He is the original source of all incarnations.

(59) He is the giver of salvation to the enemies whom He kills.

(60) He is the attractor of liberated souls.

Besides these sixty transcendental qualities, Krsna has four more, which are not manifested even in the Visnu/Narayana form of Godhead all the time, what to speak of the demigods or living entities.

They are as follows:

(61) He is the performer of wonderful varieties of pastimes (especially His childhood pastimes).

(62) He is surrounded by devotees endowed with wonderful love of Godhead.

(63) He can attract all living entities all over the universes by playing on His flute.

(64) He has a wonderful excellence of beauty which cannot be rivaled anywhere in the creation.

The Absolute Truth is anandamaya (desiring to increase His joy), hence from His original form He expands and becomes many.

These emanations from the Supreme Person are of two categories: full expansions and partially manifested expansions.

The Lord’s various full and partial expansions and the Lord Himself simultaneously co-exist, only appearing to manifest under the influence of time.

These expansions of Krsna are known as Visnu-tattva Forms of God, and they are also the Supreme Absolute Truth.

While non-different from Lord Krsna, the Visnu-tattvas are-

Balarama,

Pradyumna,

Ramachandra,

Narsingadeva

Visnu,

Narayana,

Maha-Visnu, 

Garbhodakashayi Visnu, 

Paramatma, 

And unlimited others each with their own. unique name.

All accept their own role as Godhead in the mood of Servitor to the original Supreme Being Lord Krsna, for example Visnu and Narayana Forms, all with different names, are found on all Vaikuntha planets in the spiritual sky. This relationship is the foundation of Vedic monotheism, which encompasses the inconceivable, absolute personal nature of the original Godhead.

Lord Krsna possesses two other expansive qualities known as Siva-tattva and jiva-tattva. Together with Visnu-tattva, these three qualities are representative of the Absolute Person’s- 

internal - spiritual personalities lead by Srimati Radharani and Her eternal associates. (mostly Visnu-tattva expansions of Krsna)

external - the mahat-tattva or lifeless material energy governed by Maha-Visnu, Garbhodakashayi Visnu and Paramatma.  

marginal - the separated individual jiva-souls (jiva-tattva) 

Lord Krsna has expanded Himself as Lord Visnu/Narayana, Lord Siva, and the marginal living entities (jiva-souls) that includes Lord Brahma.

Like us, Lord Brahma is also an unique individual jiva-soul with 78.125% of Krsna's qualities (having 50 of Krsna's 64 qualities).

Lord Siva is inbetween Visnu-tattva and jiva-tattva. And Lord Visnu is Visnu-tattva.

So, clearly Visnu-tattva, Siva-tattva, jiva-tattva and lifeless matter (mahat-tattva or material world [25% of the Spiritual Sky or brahmajyoti) are all expansions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Krsna in different categories.

Therefore as a reminder we can summarize as follows-

Lord Krsna has 64 qualities (100%)

Visnu-tattva has 60 qualities or 93.75%

Siva-tattva has 55 qualities or 85.938%

Jiva-tattva (jiva-souls) has 50 qualities or 78.125%

This is the reason why Krsna is called Param Purushottam, Purnavatar or Supreme Personality of Godhead. Learned scholars in transcendental subjects have carefully analyzed the summum bonum Krsna to have sixty-four principal attributes.

All the expansions or categories of the Lord possess only some percentages of these attributes. However, Sri Krsna is the possessor of the attributes cent percent (all 64 quantities in full which means 100% of His own qualities).

And His personal expansions such as svayam-prakasa, tad-ekatma up to the categories of the avataras who are all visnu-tattva, who possess up to 93.75% of Krsna's transcendental attributes (60 of Krsna's 64 qualities).

Lord Siva, who is neither avatara nor avesa nor in between them, possesses 85.938% of the attributes (55 of Krsna's 64 qualities). But the individual jiva-tattva (jiva-souls) in different statuses of life, possess up to the limit of 78.125% of Krsna's qualities (which means the jiva-souls have 50 of Krsna's 64 qualities). In the conditioned state of material existence, the living being possesses these attributes in very minute quantity, varying in terms of the pious life of the living being are greatly restricted. The most perfect of living beings in the material creation are Brahmas, the supreme administrator within each material universe.

As said above, Brahma also possesses 78.125% percent of the attributes in full and is also a marginal living entity (jiva-tattva or jiva-soul). All other demigods (except Lord Siva) have the same attributes in less quantity, whereas human beings (jiva-souls) also possess the these qualities but in very minute quantity. (SB, Canto 1 Ch 3 text 29)

Only Siva-tattva and his expansions are is in a league of his own with 85.938% of Krsna's qualities (55 of Krsna's attributes) and is inbetween Visnu-tattva and jiva-tattva.

The highest standard of perfection for a the human form of life is to develop up to 78.125% of Krsna's qualities which is having 50 of Krsna's 64 qualities.

Only in the human species (400 thousand) can the individual jiva-souls reach their fully spiritual potential of 78.125%.

The individual jiva-souls in the other 8 million species of life, have no ability of higher learning only available in the human species and live their lives restricted by the sensual material bodily instincts of- 

eating,

sleeping,

mating,

defending. 

The marginal living entities (jiva-souls) can NEVER possess all the qualities Siva (55 of Krsna's 64 qualities), Visnu (60 of Krsna's 64 qualities) and Krsna (64 qualities in full) have.

The marginal living entities (jiva-tattvas or jiva-souls) can become godly by developing their full potential of 78.125% of their transcendental attributes, but can never become God like Krsna or Visnu, or a unique demigod in a league of his own like Lord Siva. Although, the individual jiva-souls can also become a Brahma in due course (based on pious activity) as he is also jiva-tattva (jiva-soul).

The godly living beings who are all residents of the Vaikuntha planets in the spiritual sky are eternal associates of Visnu in different spiritual planets called Hari-dhama and Mahesa-dhama.

However, the abode of Lord Krsna is above all these Vaikuntha planets and is called Krsnaloka or Goloka Vrndavana, and the perfected living being, by developing 78.125% of the above attributes in full, can enter the planet of Krsnaloka after leaving the present material body.

The day the Gurukula children protested at the Soviet Consulate in Sydney.

Prahlad, Raman and myself went to the Sydney Morning Herald to meet Alan Gill, one of the most respected Journalists in Australia.

In 1985, Gill won a Walkley Award for excellence in journalism.

Whenever important religious leaders came, Pope John Paul II stepping onto the tarmac at Sydney, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, the Reverend Ian Paisley, or AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada back in the early 1970s - Alan Gill was waiting for them. 

And they always got excellent treatment from a man who knew his subject and was committed to it.

On entering the John Fairfax Building which prints the Sydney Morning Herald, we were all fascinated by a painting on the wall, obviously done back in the 1930s.

Under the painting of two people holding an edition of the Sydney Morning Herald, it read:

"Our editorial management shall be conducted upon principle of candour honesty and honour. We have no wish to mislead, no interest to gratify by unsparing abuse or indiscriminate approbation."

A security guard directed us to the reporters reception area.

Eventually Alan came and took us to his desk where a photographer waited.

The first thing Alan asked was:

"Did anyone ring the doorbell at the Soviet Consulate?"

I thought for a moment, thinking of Pratapana and Tripadi, knowing they didn't, and I certainly didn't.

"No," I said, unsure of the situation, "I don't think we did”

Laughing, Alan continues:

"I just rang them and they were going to send someone down to get your requests, no-one important, but at least it's someone, however, according to them no-one rang the doorbell."

“For God sake!", Prahlad smirkishly remarked, then continued,

"You mean we did all that and didn't even ring the doorbell?"

Embarrassed by Prahlad's innocent outburst, I quickly attempted to cover myself.

"We put our requests in their mailbox, they eventually received the information."

Alan Gill adds:

"I think it would have been more impressive if you had been seen by the media presenting them with your letter. Anyway, you're right, they'll get it anyway (laughing)."

I sat there totally embarrassed.

Alan continued:

"Anyway boys, what did you think of the demonstration? Are you happy with the result?"

Prahlad answers first:

"Yeah, a lot of media turned up. I think our message will get through."

Raman adds:

"People will know about what's going on now."

Alan commented:

"Well, I can't promise you anything. As you are all probably well aware, there is a serious crisis presently going on in the Soviet Union now with the nuclear disaster in Ukraine, and I don't know if your story will make it in the newspaper, but I'll try."

For the next half hour, the boys went through the Soviet manual explaining the situation in the Soviet Union.

Alan informed us that under Soviet Reforms of 1977, religious freedom was now allowed, and encouraged the boys to continue their fight.

He then told them how he first met Prabhupada in 1972, and was impressed with 'his theological understanding of Hinduism'.

I then noticed on the wall a framed extract that I read and appreciated:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." - American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.

"Regardless of whether we appreciate American Imperialism around the world, the basic principles of their constitution does support individual freedoms," said Alan on noticing what I was reading.

On hearing our conversation, a journalist sitting across from us added:

“Don't let those words convince you that America has always been the land of the free. Thomas Jefferson eventually signed a proclamation outlawing the religious beliefs of the Sue Indians, ordering their tribes crushed. In those days being religious, or even being a man, meant you must have European ancestry and be white, as a young man Thomas Jefferson owned hundreds of slaves but later in 1784 said slavery was a stain on the new territories and attempted to ban slavery but his proposal failed in a congress by one vote.”

We then thanked Alan Gill for his interest and support and left.

On the way out, we met a Catholic Priest. Prahlad stared at him while he seemed fascinated by the boys robes, finally Prahlad asked:

"Do the Catholics teach that only the Catholics can go back to God's Kingdom?"

The priest smiles at the boy and replies:

"The Catholic Church teaches that it's possible for anyone Protestant, Mohammed, Hindu, Jew, Buddhist, anyone who does God's will according to his conscience can also enter back into the Kingdom of God."

Prahlad looked impressed by the priest's comment.

Looking at me the priest continues:

“I'm sixty-eight years of age, I've lived in Europe and travelled South East Asia, and you know, over the years I've learnt a very important lesson."

Looking over at the boys smiling the Priest continues,

"Sometimes we think we have a long, long road ahead of us, even to the extent that it's so long we may never see the end, then you start rushing, and you rush here and there, and every time you look up you see the road is no shorter than it was before.

Then you stress and you strain, then you start getting frightened and fearful of what the future holds and become exhausted, so much so you can't go another step."

He then lifts up his finger and again continues, attempting to give advice to all of us,

"You must never think of the whole road all at once, you should always think of one step at a time, that's all, just one step at a time, then life becomes fun, it becomes simple and not full of schemes and plans that depend too much on others.

Just learn to make your life simple by giving the best you can, and not what others expect of you. This is important, because then you do your job well and are able to go the full distance of life, and never be tired or out of breath."

Afterwards, curiously, Prahlad asked:

"Could you understand what he meant?"

"Well," I attempted to explain, "I think what he is saying is we should not worry about the future, but do what is right and necessary NOW, according to your own level of commitment.

I suppose what he is really saying is that we must just learn to be ourselves, then our future will work out for the better, he is 68 and I am 34, his words are his life time experience.

But sadly most religions today try to become comfortable in this material world because they do not know they are not their material body, whereas devotees of Krishna know it is not our real home."

Prahlad gives his opinion.

"Um, I suppose it's a bit like the story of Prahlada Maharaj; he told all his school friends to worship God while they were still young, and yes, not make mundane plans for the future in this material world."

“Anyway, we should see it through the eyes of our shastra (scripture) also as you just said because devotees are trained to get out of this decaying temporary material world and go back home back to Godhead.’’ I added.

That night we all crowded into the TV room at North Sydney Temple to watch the news. All the networks had shown the stories at length.

On Channel 10 the devotees appeared just after the Chernobyl disaster report.

In fact, the entire news was about demonstrations, from the Krishnas, Jews, Ukrainians, and the Chernobyl disaster in the Soviet Union.

The next morning the heading on Page 2 of the Sydney Morning Herald was 'Soviets Face Day of Protests On Chernobyl And Krishnas' 

"About 250 Ukrainian Australians stormed the Sydney office of In tourist yesterday, covering the office with anti-Soviet stickers and hurling questions at the staff about everything from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster to Stalin's brutal collectivisation programs of the 1930s.

An hour earlier, the Soviets had been experiencing a more peaceful demonstration outside the Soviet Consulate as about 80 followers of the Hare Krishna religion released 25 doves to protest against religious persecution.

Freedom of religion is theoretically guaranteed under the Soviet constitution yet official Soviet publications have listed Krishna Consciousness as the third greatest threat to modern Russia. (The other two, in descending order of importance, are Western imperialism and rock and roll music)

The protest in Sydney coincides with publication of a report - authenticated by non-Krishna sources - of civil rights abuses affecting the Hare Krishna and other minority religions in Russia.

It includes accounts of interrogations, raids on meetings, beatings, and confinements in labour camps, prisons and psychiatric institutions."

The Melbourne Age showed the children releasing the doves.

These articles we read while driving back to Murwillumbah. We left at 3 am.

On arrival we discovered we were also on the front page of the Daily News and the Gold Coast Bulletin and in the Brisbane Telegraph on May 5th 1986.

Thirteen children from the Hare Krishna Movement's Murwillumbah school joined 150 disciples yesterday in a peaceful demonstration outside the Russian Consulate in Sydney.

The movement's public relations manager in Sydney, Tony Foley said the demonstration was organised to protest the Soviet Union's refusal to recognise the religion or its members in the country.

He said 25 members have been arrested from 1984 with sentences from four to seven years for supporting their beliefs.

The demonstration, which had a Federal police permit, comprised chanting and the presentation of wreaths and banners on the steps of the consulate.

“The campaign will go on until the Hare Krishna Movement is registered in Russia,"

Mr. Foley said.

“The demonstration was coordinated with other protests organised outside Russian embassies and consulates around the world."

Mr Foley said there were 10,000 congregational members living in the Soviet Union.

"Sect Kids To Join Global Protest." (Gold Coast Bulletin)

Hare Krishna children from the sect's Tweed Valley commune will take part in a global protest against alleged persecution of the movement's followers in the Soviet Union.

About 30 flower-bearing students from the Hare Krishna school near Murwillumbah will travel to Sydney to join next Monday's protest outside the Russian consulate.

The children will lay a wreath at the consulate in memory of baby Marika Kiseleva, whom the sect says died after being taken from its jailed Krishna mother by Soviet authorities.

The sect says Marika's mother, Olga, 38, is one of 25 Hare Krishna devotees serving long terms in Russian prisons because of their beliefs.

"There is clearly a violation of human rights," said Krishna spokesman Gary Anderson.

"The Australian branch of the Campaign to Free the Soviet Hare Krishnas will take the issue to its limits, we will fight relentlessly for the freedom of our Godbrothers and Godsisters in Russia."

"Sect Plan For Vigil." (Sydney Telegraph)

Members of the Tweed Valley Hare Krishna sect will hold a four hour vigil outside the Russian Consulate in Sydney Today to protest against the persecution of members in the Soviet Union.

The Sydney demonstration will be repeated outside Russian embassies and consulates throughout the world in a bid to highlight the plight of 25 Hare Krishna’s imprisoned by the Russian authorities.

Spokesman for the Tweed group, Mr. Gary Anderson (Gauragopala Dasa), said 60 adults and 30 children had gone to Sydney to plea for the prisoners' release. 

He said devotees would use placards and chants to bring home their message to the Russian officials.

Children would lay a wreath on the steps of the Consulate in memory of a Hare Krishna baby who died at 11 months after being separated from its jailed mother, Olga Kiseleva.

Mr. Anderson said the arrests of the Russian Hare Krishnas had been documented by Amnesty International. They were being held against their will in labor camps, jails and psychiatric hospitals.

The movement had been outlawed by the Brezhnev regime, who saw it as a threat to communism.

"He is quoted as saying the three biggest threats to communism are Western culture, Western rock music and the Hare Krishna movement," Mr. Anderson said.

"He said the persecution of sect members was a violation of human rights, and the 45,000 followers throughout the world would fight relentlessly for the release of the Russians and their right to practise freely the religion of their choice."

Enthused to attempt to obtain more coverage on the letter before it was sent to Russia, we took Prahlad and Raman to the Gold Coast Bulletin.

I waited in the car while they went in on their own, I wanted to see the result of their preaching without an adult being there.

The journalist, Peter Nally, was impressed with the boys. The next day the article was mentioned on the front page and the full article was on Page 3.

The Daily News (Tweed Heads-Murwillumbah) and Northern Star (Lismore), printed articles too. 

Many letters to the Editor praised the boys efforts (many written by devotees)

Regardless of who wrote them, they further created more interest within the Australian community about the persecution of Krishna devotees in the Soviet Union.

Dear Editor,

Those Hare Krishna kids who wrote to Soviet leader Mr. Gorbachev are right. Peace starts at home, and since home is where the heart is, those Russians should examine their own hearts instead of huffing and puffing about nuclear disarmament etc, while at the same time persecuting their minorities - religious and otherwise.

Just as in the final analysis a person is judged by what he does rather than by what he says, so will the Russians as a nation be judged.

Teachers in schools around Australia were influenced by the Krishna kids campaign and encouraged school children to write letters to world leaders, expressing their views about Human rights and freedom during the International Year Of Peace of 1986.

Dear Premier Gorbachev. 

For a long time now we have wanted to visit your country, but we are a little bit scared about the things we have heard about Russia. We have heard some terrible things about what is happening there to the parents of Hare Krishna children. They must be strong devotees of Krishna to be punished just because they are following a religion that they feel is right, and put into labour camps and hospitals, and still be keeping their beliefs. We don't think you would like it if you were punished for a belief you have.
