Krsna devotees from the Soviet Union first arrived in Mayapur India in March 1989 after Moscow allowed the pilgrimage to go ahead.

ISKCON was first registered as an authorised Religion in the Soviet Union on June 19th 1988.

March 1989 was the first time ever that "Soviet" devotees were allowed to travel to the Mayapur Festival in India to celebrate Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu's appearance day, and also Vrindavana where child Krsna grew up, and Mathura were Krsna was born.

The Soviet Union still existed in 1989 and Russia and Ukraine were just 2 of its 15 Republics.

I am the third devotee from the right at top with small Narsingadeva around my neck.

Ananta Shanti, the first Hare Krsna devotee in Russia in 1971, sadly did not come to Mayapur Festival in 1989.

The photo of devotees from the "Soviet Union" is 34 years old taken in Mayapur India.
